Belmullet mechanic drove at 180km/h during garda chase

Judge Fiona Lydon described the speed as "incredible".

An Erris mechanic drove at speeds of more than 180km/h during a Garda chase, a court has heard.

Ciaran Cafferkey, of Attycunnane, Belmullet pleaded guilty at Belmullet District Court to dangerous driving and failing to have insurance.

Gda Sean Hough told the court he was on mobile patrol at Barrack Street, Belmullet on March 13 last when he saw Cafferkey’s blue BMW taking off at speed towards Attycunnane. Gda Hough attempted to follow with his vehicle, reaching speeds of 180km/h, but he struggled to keep pace with Cafferkey’s car.

Cafferkey’s driving caused several oncoming cars to take evasive action and one motorist’s vehicle was badly damaged when loose chippings struck their car and broke the windscreen.

Gda Hough said he was forced to pull in as he felt continuing the pursuit would be too dangerous.

When he tracked down Cafferkey, the defendant produced insurance but it was for another vehicle.

Solicitor Samantha Geraghty said her client attended the local garda station last Tuesday and apologised for his actions. A sum of €300 in compensation was paid to the motorist who had their windscreen smashed.

Ms Geraghty said the accused was working as an apprentice mechanic in a local garage and was going home for lunch. He "panicked" when he saw Gardaí.

“He did put lives in danger,” the solicitor stated.

Ms Geraghty said the defendant will not be able to test drive vehicles as part of his work due to the driving disqualification that will ensue.

“That’s on his own head,” said the legal representative.

The court heard Cafferkey did not have insurance because he did not believe he would secure cover due to the size of the engine of the car.

“The speed was incredible,” remarked Judge Fiona Lydon. “What is going on in this area among the youth? Is it a badge of honour to be speeding?"

“It seems to be for some of them,” replied Insp Dermot Butler.

Judge Lydon imposed a two-year driving disqualification as well as fines totalling €2,000.
