Councillors discuss 'nightmare' boy-racers with local Superintendent

A local councillor has described boy-racer activity in Ballina as "a nightmare".
Councillors from the Ballina Municipal District met with the town’s new Superintendent to discuss a shortage of Gardaí and other issues. The private meeting took place before last week’s municipal district meeting.
Supt Alan Brady was assigned to the Mayo North Community Engagement Functional Area, operating out of Ballina Garda Station, following promotion last July, replacing outgoing Supt Gary Walsh, who was promoted to Chief Superintendent.
Cllr Seamus Weir said councillors spoke to Supt Brady about a shortage of Gardaí in the Ballina area and it was agreed that Mayo County Council would write to the Department of Justice regarding this.
A recent Ballina Chamber Business Outlook survey found that 80% of business owners feel there is a need for increased levels of Gardaí on the streets of Ballina. Cllr Weir added that Supt Brady has been working hard to deal with the ongoing issue of boy and girl racers.
“There is progress being made. The local Gardaí are working with the community to do something in Diamond Car Park to stop these people flying around in their cars,” said Cllr Weir. “They are trying to work with the people involved in this activity and I welcome that. It has been a nightmare for local residents with boy and girl racers.”
