Councillor wants Ballina to improve toilet facilities for wheelchair users

Cllr Mark Duffy has called for the installation of toilets that suit all wheelchair users.

A local councillor has called on the Ballina Municipal District to consider installing toilets suitable for all wheelchair users.

Cllr Mark Duffy said he recently became aware half of toilets for the disabled do not cater to all wheelchair users and urged Mayo County Council to look into the Changing Places initiative.

Changing Places facilities provide a larger space and include specialist equipment such as full ceiling hoist systems. Cllr Duffy said installing these facilities would give a lot of parents of wheelchair users in Ballina some peace of mind.

“Some parents come into town and know they only have two or three hours before they need to return home for a bathroom break," he told a meeting of the municipal council. “This would be worthwhile for parents of wheelchair users and would make Ballina a more attractive option for these parents to come into town and do their shopping.”

Head of the district Declan Turnbull said he would look further into the initiative.
