Councillor says electricity disconnections at 'record level'

Independent Councillor Harry Barrett

Record numbers of people are in arrears or being disconnected from their electricity supply, according to a local councillor.

Cllr Harry Barrett was reacting to a presentation by representatives of ESB Networks and EirGrid at last week's meeting of Mayo Co Council's Environment and Climate Change Strategic Policy Committee.

“I think ESB Networks and EirGrid are completely on the wrong track. Nothing in the presentation today tells me it will reduce the price of electricity on ordinary families. In a single year, charges have already gone up 11.8%; a record number of people are in arrears with their energy bills and there is a record number of disconnections also.”

Cllr Peter Flynn asked why it was that “we have the highest electricity rates in Europe”.

EirGrid's Michael Kelly said such issues were not within the delegation's remit.
