'Forever part of our story': Mayo GAA club mourns a local legend

The late Willie Malee, Carracastle, Bohola

There is great sadness following the passing of Willie Malee, Carracastle, Bohola, peacefully at Mayo University Hospital surrounded by his family.

The deceased was a popular member of the community who was well known in local sporting circles for his involvement with his parish club Moy Davitts and for his role with the Mayo Over-40s team.

Moy Davitts GAA paid the following tribute to Willie, who they described as a valued member of the club who played a significant role in its foundation and development.

“As a founding Treasurer of our club in 1974, and as a player and selector he gave generously of time, energy and commitment to Moy Davitts, helping to lay the foundations upon which our club is built today.”

“Through his involvement as a player and selector and more recently as a supporter, Willie demonstrated his undoubted passion for football and took pride in victories, especially those over our local rivals. His name will forever be part of the Moy Davitts story and the legacy he helped create will live on through every player who wears the club jersey.”

Willie was predeceased by his parents Michael and Kathleen, his granddaughter Isabelle, grandson Joey, his sister Mary and his brother Joseph.

Willie is survived by his wife Bernadine and family Catherine, Andrew and Linda, sons in-law Michael and Patrick and daughter in-law Tracey, his grandchildren Dylan, Hannah, Mollie, Sophia, Summer, Josh, Ruby Mae, Ivy, Jasmyn, Jodie and Andy, his siblings Kathleen, Teresa and Dymphna, extended family and many friends.
