Councillor calls for increase in bus shelters

Cllr Dara Mulvey has called for the provision of bus shelters along two popular routes.

A Sligo councillor has called for the provision of bus shelters along two popular routes.

Cllr Dara Mulvey said there was a "critical" need to provide these amenities along the local link 981 route from Coolaney to Sligo ATU and St Angela’s College and the 977 route from Castlerea to Sligo.

“It is very welcome that we now have very busy local link bus services but we need to ensure bus shelters are delivered and delivered soon, especially with bus services growing in popularity,” said Cllr Mulvey.

“People availing of the service deserve to have somewhere safe near them to stand and wait in a proper bus shelter to ensure the stop is safe and dry.”

Recent figures revealed by Transport Minister Eamon Ryan show that the volume of bus users has increased by up to 366% since 2020, which demonstrates the need for more bus shelters, said Cllr Mulvey.

“I have made a submission to the Active Travel Office in Sligo County Council with this request and am hopeful of a favourable response,” he added.
