Council 'would not have resources' to enforce new by-laws on campervans

A Westport councillor has claimed that some streets in the town are being treated like halting sites by campervan users.

Speaking at a recent meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District meeting, Independent Cllr Christy Hyland said Mayo County Council needs to draft new by-laws to deal with campervans and asked that the matter be on the agenda for the next meeting.

“What’s going on at some of the streets, particularly at [Westport's] Fairgreen where people get up some mornings and four campervans are outside their houses, is not good enough."

Head of the district, Padraic Walsh, said the council has not drafted campervan by-laws yet because of staffing issues, but added that he does not believe they will have the desired effect that Cllr Hyland wants.

“If someone parks up a campervan at 8pm on a Saturday night, there will be nobody there to enforce the by-laws. If you’re suggesting to me that we have people available 24/7, 365 days, to enforce campervan by-laws, that won’t happen. We don’t have that level of resources,” Mr Walsh said.
