Concerns over anti-social behaviour and fires at derelict Mayo property
The fire service responded to the scene.
There are calls for action on a long-standing derelict site which has been the location of anti-social behaviour and a recent fire.
A pair of large vacant homes on Pound Road in Castlebar has been problematic for a number of years and have been in a dilapidated condition for decades.
Local councillor Ger Deere was passing the site this week when he spotted smoke and alerted the emergency services.
The site is back from the road and surrounded by vegetation and trees.
Following concerns raised by local residents over 20 years ago, fencing was erected around the area by the former Castlebar Town Council but that has recently been dismantled and broken down by trespassers.
Cllr Deere said the site has become a drinking den and he understands there have been a number of recent fires at the location.
“It’s a recipe for disaster. The old roof is still on it and if that ever collapsed in on youngsters or whoever else is in there,” said Cllr Deere.
He said it was such a shame that the once impressive property is in its current condition.
The Fine Gael councillor said he is carrying out investigations into the current ownership status of the properties.
