Concerns aired about people drinking alcohol in alleys of Mayo town

Cllr Cyril Burke.
A Fine Gael councillor has raised concerns about people "drinking [alcohol] in alleys" around Castlebar.
Cllr Cyril Burke told last week's MD meeting the problem is particularly bad in the alleys off Linenhall St.
"We don’t know where these people are living or who they are, but they are there in the late evening, shouting and causing a bit of disorder. How can we enforce the by-laws on this?”
Cllr Michael Kilcoyne said there were no garda resources in the town to enforce anything, just one garda car that could be out in Tourmakeady or anywhere that might make a call.
Cllr Burke said: “I propose we write to the Garda Commissioner and ask for information on this. How many enforcements are being made and what is being done.”
Cllr Blackie Gavin said: “Regarding the drinking on Lucan Street, I have been bringing this up for eight years, someone is going to get badly hurt.”
Cllr Michael Kilcoyne said: “I know the law and order party is in government but nothing is being done. People are being frightened. There are more knives being carried around the town than there would be in a butcher’s shop. We need more gardaí patrolling the streets.”
