New publican's licence granted for closed Mayo bar

The premises has been closed since April this year.

A new publican’s licence has been granted for a former late-night venue in order to pave the way for its sale.

The certificate of publican’s licence was granted to Thomas Maloney who owns Cox’s bar and restaurant on Tucker Street in Castlebar.

The matter came before a sitting of Castlebar Circuit Court today.

Mr Maloney is the owner of the property and leased the premises to the former licence holder before its closure, The popular bar closed in April this year and was put on the market soon after. The court heard Mr Maloney acquired the property around 20 years ago.

Dr Laura Byrne, representing the applicant, said the previous licence had lapsed unbeknownst to Mr Maloney. She said when her client learned of this the premises ceased trading soon after.

Dr Byrne said it is Mr Maloney’s intention to sell the entire premises as a going concern. The court heard he operates pubs in the UK, but Mr Maloney was not involved in the running of Cox’s and rented the bar to the previous licence holder.

Judge Garavan approved the granting of the seven-day ordinary licence and wished Mr Maloney well in his plans to sell the property.
