CCTV campaign for Mayo town takes a step forward

The first phase in a campaign for a community CCTV system in Foxford has been completed following the launch of a local fundraising drive.

The campaign, launched in May by Foxford native and businessman Jason Howley, aims to raise funds for a state-of-the-art CCTV system to help deter anti-social behaviour and improve community safety. The project is expected to cost around €40,000, with cameras to be installed at selected locations around the town.

Foxford-based councillor Neil Cruise confirmed that the first phase of the project has now been completed. He praised the work of the Foxford CCTV Oversight Committee for its efforts in organising the initiative and preparing the town for the installation of a new surveillance system.

“It was a great achievement to have Phase One completed in advance of the recent reception for EU Enterprise and Social Protection Ministers held in the Foxford Woollen Mills,” he said. “This will be an invaluable tool to make our community a much safer place.”

Cllr Cruise explained that when incidents of anti-social behaviour or crime are reported, ETI Security, the firm that will operate the system, will assist Gardaí with investigations once a PULSE incident number has been generated.

Attention is now turning to the second phase of the project, with organisers appealing to local residents, businesses and the wider community to support the crowdfunding campaign. Similar systems have been installed elsewhere in Mayo, including in Killala, where a community‑led campaign saw the rollout of a CCTV system that is now reported to be working successfully.
