A transport scheme in West Mayo has been hugely successful and a similar service is required in the Louisburgh area, according to a local councillor.
Last week's meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District was told that the Anseo local transport scheme is offering eight daily return services between Mulranny and Castlebar and five to Westport.
"These offer flexible on-demand travel for local people, support rural development and enhance quality of life," explained Mayo Co Council's climate action officer Laura Dixon. "The buses, we are told, are full all the time, with women telling us they are travelling on to Clifden now. It’s a great scheme and one of only three [in Ireland].”
Cllr Chris Maxwell said he attended the presentation of Anseo as a pilot scheme.
“I was told that if the pilot project proved successful, they would consider expanding it and I had asked for it to be introduced in the Louisburgh area. We have Roonagh and Killeen which has lost its bus service for years and all the way out to Delphi and Cushlough. We could all do with the decent service Anseo is providing.”
Ms Dixon said she would discuss the matter with the Local Link service to see if anything could be done.
