There was a Bonniconlon connection to St Thomas' dramatic All-Ireland club hurling final victory at Croke Park yesterday.
The six in a row Galway champions won their second-ever All-Ireland title as Éanna Burke's magnificent winner defeated Kilkenny's O'Loughlin Gaels in Sunday's final.
Floreen Kelly (née Gilmartin) Castleboy, Kilchreest, Loughrea, Co Galway, and formerly of Carracrum, Bonniconlon, passed away after a battle with Alzheimer's and dementia in October 2021.
Floreen's son Gerald played in goal for St Thomas yesterday, as he played a big part in his club's first Tommy Moore Cup since their maiden win in 2013. Gerald made a number of saves in their famous penalty shootout win over Waterford kingpins Ballygunner in the semi-final in December.

Speaking to TG4 prior to the match, Gerald said that Floreen had a massive impact on his hurling career as she brought him to training and matches and she was ever presented.
It was Gerald's first All-Ireland final and he said it was going to be an "emotional day", but there's no doubt his beloved mother is looking down smiling at son's achievements today.
