Big rise in planning permits for houses in Mayo in 2024

The number of housing units granted planning permission in Mayo grew by almost 90% in 2024.
Figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) last week show that Mayo Co Council granted planning permission last year for 317 one-off housing units and an additional 405 units as part of 25 separate multi-development housing plans for a total of 722 units.
In 2023, the local authority granted permission for 287 one-off houses and an additional 97 units in 12 separate multi-development plans, a total of 384 units.
The increase from 2023 to 2024 was around 88% and last year's total easily eclipses several previous years. The previous high of units for which planning was granted since this data was first collected in 2018 was recorded in 2021 when 422 units were granted planning permission.
A spokesperson for the CSO said it does not have data specific to planning permissions for homes that had to be demolished or rebuilt due to pyrite or mica.
“Unfortunately, we do not collect data on planning permissions granted for the purposes of the demolition and the subsequent rebuilding of a house,” they told the
. “We do collect data on alterations, renovations and conversions approved for dwelling units and this would likely include homes in these circumstances. However, we would be unable to state how many, if any, of these permissions were specifically for pyrite/mica-affected houses as we do not collect information on this.”There was also a year-on-year increase in the number of private flats and apartments granted planning permission in Mayo. In 2023, 19 such developments consisting of a total of 110 units were approved compared to 36 developments and a total of 113 units in 2024.
The data for Mayo contrast with the national figures, which show total planning approvals dropping by 21% according to the CSO, a statistic driven by a massive decline in the number of apartments being approved for construction.
