An Coimisiún Pleanála has given the green light to a project that will see the construction of four houses in Dugort on Achill Island.
Mayo County Council previously approved planning for the development at Dugort East.
It is proposed to construct four detached dwelling houses, made up of two dormer houses and two single storey houses on a two acre site which adjoins the main road through the village.
Appeals were lodged to An Coimisiún Pleanála citing concerns over sightlines and the unsuitablility of the location. It was also claimed that a new vehicular entrance would pose a traffic hazard.
The planning authority stated it did not accept that the site is on the periphery of the village or that the development would represent an unsustainable pattern of growth and erosion of rural character.
In addressing the sightlines issue, the An Coimisiún Pleanála inspector said since 2024 the speed limit for local roads has been reduced from 80km per hour to 60km per hour.
The Inspector stated that through the provision of a speed survey and engineering drawings has adequately demonstrated that the vehicular entrance proposed would have adequate sightlines in accordance with the requirements of the Mayo County Development Plan.
Planning permission was granted for the development, subject to 15 conditions.
