Appeal to preserve dunes at Mayo beach

An appeal has been issued for people not to walk along the dunes on Bertra Beach near Westport in order to prevent further erosion.

The Cathaoirleach of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District Cllr Peter Flynn told members at last week's municipal meeting that some “marvellous work was carried out over the last few weeks to try and protect and restore the dunes".

"We are very grateful for the community effort but I would appeal to people not to walk or run on the dunes as this is causing difficulty.”

Cllr Flynn said the dunes were critical to the containment of the surrounding area, adding: “They are absolutely decimated at the far end heading towards Murrisk and this will have serious implications for the entire inner Clew Bay area.”

Director of Services Joanne Grehan said works due to take place at Carrowmore and Keel beaches "will be signed off on in the coming weeks and work will commence imminently".

Numerous complaints have been made about anti-social behaviour on Old Head beach in Louisburgh, according to the Cathaoirleach of Westport-Belmullet MD. Cllr Peter Flynn stated at the June meeting of the authority that the incidents were happening at night time and said the matter needed to be looked at either by Mayo County Council or the Gardai.
