An investment of €3 million was announced for a new fire station in Ballyhaunis.

Under the Fire Services Capital Programme, a purpose-built, state-of-the-art fire station will be constructed on a new greenfield site, relocating the Ballyhaunis Fire Service from Clare Street.

Local Cllr Alma Gallagher said the existing station has long faced challenges with parking and delayed response times owing to traffic congestion.

“This is a hugely important investment for Ballyhaunis and the wider area. The current station has served us well but it is no longer fit for purpose given the operational demands placed on our fire service,” she said.

“This new, modern facility will greatly enhance response capabilities and ensure the safety of our community for years to come.”

The new fire station will be constructed with a uniform, modern design with adequate parking and dedicated facilities for male and female firefighters on duty.

Project consultations have commenced with procurement expected to begin shortly.

The overall investment of €328 million in Fire Services was welcomed by Deputy Keira Keogh.

“The Fire Service are part of the first responders in times of traffic accidents and play a vital role in the coordinated emergency response of road safety,” she said. “Without up-to-date equipment and vehicles these responders cannot carry out their work.”

“More support will be needed to get the Ballyhaunis project off the ground but the allocation of funding is a huge step forward”.
