Local Fianna Fáil TD and Minister of State in the Department of Enterprise Dara Calleary, has today welcomed the turning of the sod on the site of a new manufacturing plant in Athenry, Co Galway, which will see the creation of up to 1,000 jobs for the West of Ireland.

Dexcom, a US multi-national is a global leader in continuous glucose monitoring for people with diabetes. The site in Athenry will be Dexcom’s first manufacturing site in Europe.

Minister Dara Calleary attended the sod-turning ceremony this afternoon. He said, "I am delighted that Dexcom has chosen to make this major new investment in the West of Ireland, which will see the creation of up to 1,000 jobs. This represents one of the biggest single private sector investments ever in the West of Ireland and demonstrates a huge vote of confidence in our significant and growing talent pool.

"Great credit must also be given to Atlantic Technological University and University of Galway who continue to be at the forefront of promoting educational excellence and facilitating partnerships between academia and industry. This, coupled with a commitment to fostering innovation and nurturing talent has garnered the confidence of multinational corporations such as Dexcom, in seeking strategic locations for their investments.

"The breaking of ground today signals an important milestone in this facility becoming a reality which we expect to be operational in two years time.

"It is a great day for the West but an even better day for the hundreds of millions of people living with diabetes across the world who will benefit from the products that are going to be made at the plant. "
