Lots to see and do for Mayo Day 2026
The theme of this year's Mayo Day is 'The Connected County'.
Mayo Day, the annual celebration of all things Mayo, returns this coming Saturday, May 2nd with a day-long celebration.
The theme of this year’s Mayo Day is ‘The Connected County’ and this year Mayo Day will be connecting up the county with events taking place in all corners of Mayo.
All Mayo Day events are free to attended for members of the public (some may require tickets – see www.mayoday.ie for more information).
The flagship event of this year’s Mayo Day is the already sold-out Mayo Day Grand Finale Concert in the TF Royal in Castlebar, which will be hosted by Mayo native and RTÉ broadcaster Louise Duffy. On the night the likes of Sean Keane, Niall McCabe, Stuart Moyles and more take to the stage.
Following on from the success of last year's Mayo Day where events took place across the county, this year Mayo County Council opened up funding opportunities for community groups and organisations to host Mayo Day in their locality.
Resulting from this call out next Saturday will see 30 events taking place across 18 different locations including Westport, Louisburgh, Aghamore, Clogher, Ballycroy, Achill, Claremorris, Ballina, Cong, Castlebar and Kiltimagh.
Mags Connell, Administrative Officer, Communications Department, Mayo County Council speaking ahead of Mayo Day said: “Mayo Day has always been a day of celebrating our county and our people. Last year was the first year we spread events out across the county, and it was a huge success. We were overwhelmed by the interest from communities this year to host Mayo Day events, and it has resulted in the day really becoming a county wide celebration.
“But it’s not just a celebration of Mayo here at home, it is also a celebration for Mayo people across the globe, and I urge everyone with Mayo roots to get involved next Saturday and celebrate Mayo Day if they are in Bohola, Boston or Brisbane.”
Some of the highlights of the day include the the Mayo Day Food Festival will be hosted by Cabots Cookery School in Aughagower, The Croabh Eo Wood Turners open day in Aghamore, – an illustrated talk by historian Dr Michael M O’Connor in Claremorris.
For the theatre and film lovers there will be performances of in Kiltimagh and in Achill, while in Cong a guided walking tour of the filming locations of is on offer.
There is plenty of events for the younger Mayo residents with Mayo Day in Ballycroy where both the local community council and the Ballycroy Visitors Centre at Wild Nephin National Park will be hosting a day of events, and in Ballina a day of events is taking place in the Ballina Arts Centre.
For the active person you can get Mayo Day off to healthy start by taking part in one of the six parkruns in Castlebar, Claremorris, Erris, Ballina, Achill and Westport which will be joining in the Mayo Day celebrations on the day.
