Ballyglass Community Council hosted a presentation on the meaning of Ballyglass Townland names, followed by the unveiling of a wall-hanging showing all those townlands and physical features, in Ballyglass Community Centre on August 21st. The event took place as part of National Heritage Week.

Nora Conroy welcomed guest speaker Patrick Keane, from Claremorris, who spoke with great enthusiasm and knowledge about the meanings of the names everyone in the Carra area knows so well. It was an engaging and enlightening talk.

Afterwards, Patrick was invited to cut the ribbon on a beautiful fabric wall-hanging, depicting a map of the townlands in Ballyglass, which will be displayed on the wall in community centre for many years to come.

The talented women from Ballyglass Needles and Yarn group who put their time, energy and wonderful skills to use in the making of this beautiful piece were all present on the night. They are Sally Keane, Mena Mahon, Rita Nestor, Nora Conroy, Noreen Longworth, Breege Jennings and Patricia Nestor.

Thanks to Patrick Keane, Niamh Naughton, from Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board, and the National Heritage Council for their support.

Championship clash

In the Connacht Gold Senior Club Championship, Group 3 – Round 3, Ballaghadereen and Ballintubber play on next Saturday, September 6th, at 8pm in Garrymore.

Though both sides have already qualified for the quarter-finals, the mixture of twilight and necessary lights are unlikely to baffle Ballaghadereen who are currently in superb form. Ballintubber have been doing just about enough so far in this year’s championship and will be no easy pushover for the East Mayo boys. It should be a close and exciting contest. Strong support for the men in red is urged.

The late Mick Mulchrone

It is with deep sadness we record the passing of Michael (Mick) Mulchrone, Lakeview, Knockglass, Newport.

His remains reposed at St Dominick’s Funeral Home, Newport on Friday, August 22nd, with removal from his residence the next morning to St Patrick’s Church, Newport for Requiem Mass. Burial ceremonies took place afterwards in Ballintubber Abbey Cemetery.

May he rest in peace.

Control of dogs

Dog fouling on the grounds of Ballintubber Abbey is a major issue of concern. It is also a problem in the adjoining graveyard. A cemetery is a sacred place and some families have been justifiably upset to find fouling on their graves. Understandably it has been decided that only guide dogs are permitted in the grounds of the Abbey.
