The Big House in the West: Past, Present and Future', is the title of a one day seminar that ATU, Mayo will host on Saturday, November 23. This event is in association with Mayo County Council's Local Community Development Committee and Mayo North East.

Ballintubber GAA lotto

Ballintubber GAA Jackpot stood at €7,400 on Sunday night November 3. The numbers drawn were 6, 14, 29 and 36. Consolation prizes went to Margaret Jennings, Billy Staunton, Kevin Curley, Ann Cannon Caroline Heneghan and E J Duffy. The jackpot stood at €7,500 on last Sunday night, November 10.

Club AGM

The annual general meeting of Ballintubber GAA Club has regretfully been postponed for a few weeks. A new date will shortly be advertised. All who support the club and participate in its activities are asked to be in attendance.

Christmas Market

Save the date for the Ballyglass Christmas market on November 30, at the later time of 2-6pm. There will be crafts, baked goods, food vans, activities for the children, Christmas tree lighting, carol singing and maybe even a visit from the man in red. What’s The Story?

Continuing the popular series of storytelling events in Ballyglass Community Centre, entitled ‘What’s the Story?’ storyteller Órla McGovern will take centre stage on Saturday, November 23. The event kicks off with a workshop from 11am to 2pm entitled ‘Improvisation in Storytelling’, followed by a storytelling evening from 7.30 to 10pm. Congratulations to Helen Malone, Ballyglass, who was part of the All-Ireland winning women’s darts cup final, held in Limerick last weekend. Well done, Helen.

Vegetable boxes

Joe Kelly, who sells fresh vegetables at the monthly Ballyglass markets, has organised a weekly vegetable box delivery service to Ballyglass Community Centre. He delivers boxes of fresh seasonal organic vegetables, to be picked up on Tuesday evenings between 5 and 5.30pm at the community centre. The boxes cost €20 each. Irish Dancing

Irish Dancing classes for children aged 4 and upwards in the Community Centre continue every Wednesday from 4.30 to 5.30, and cost €5 per class, pay as you go. Beginners are very welcome.

Art classes

Art classes have commenced in Ballyglass Community Centre on Mondays at 6.45pm. 6 classes cost €50. Anyone who is interested upgrading their art skills can contact Nora on 087 9729672.

Mother and Toddler Group

A new mother and baby/toddler group is being formed in the childcare centre, Carnacon. All facilities are being offered to them free of charge. Wednesday, November 6, (10am-12pm) was the first week but if attendees want to change to any other day they will be able to do so. Pastoral Council meeting

The next Pastoral Council will take place on November 19, at 8pm in the Dorter Room, Ballintubber Abbey. All members are requested to attend.

Carnacon cards

A 25 drive (singles hands with 16 games) started in Carnacon Community Centre on Thursday nights at 8.30pm. There is a raffle and refreshments served after the game. There is a special prize for the person with the greatest number of games, and the least number of games at Christmas. All card players are welcome.

The late Margaret Walsh

The death has taken place of Margaret Walsh nee Bourke, Derryveeney, Tourmakeady, and formerly of Sraheen, Aughagower, Westport. Margaret passed away peacefully at her home on November 4. She was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many, and her absence will be sorely felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Margaret will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, neighbour and friend to so many. Predeceased by her husband Paddy and her infant son, her parents Michael and Bridget, her twin brother Michael and her sister Mary, Margaret is deeply regretted by her heartbroken family, her daughters Mary McGovern (Paddy), Castlebar, Bridget McDermott (Dermot), Naas, Eileen McManamon (Noel), Westport, Kathleen Cooney (P.J.), Achill, Mairead Butler (Tony), The Neale, her sons Michael John (Bridie), Derryveeney, Pat (Marie), Essex and Partry, and Ciaran (Christine), Derryveeney, her 23 grandchildren and her 8 great-grand-children, extended family, neighbours and friends to whom sincere condolences are extended.

There was a large attendance present as Margaret’s remains reposed at Tourmakeady Hall on last Wednesday evening from 5pm until 8pm. The removal of her remains from her family home took place on Thursday morning to St. Mary’s Church, Tourmakeady for Requiem Mass at 12 noon with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dilís.

Water Development Fund 2025

Applications are now open for Local Authority Waters Programme Community Water Development Fund 2025. This is a grants scheme to enable community driven projects that will help improve water quality. ‘Destination Gibbstown’

There are some extra copies of the book “Destination Gibbstown” available in the Halla Pobail. The book tells the stories of the families who migrated to Gibbstown Co Meath from Mayo and other Gaeltacht’s in 1937/1939. The cost of book is €30. It is a great collection of history and heritage and well worth a read.

Community Facilities Grant

Funding for upgrading and refurbishment works to enhance existing community facilities across twenty towns and villages in Mayo has been confirmed by Minister Heather Humphreys under Category 1 of the Community Centres Investment Fund. Partry Community Council has received €17,000 under this worthwhile scheme.

Balla Tidy Towns were delighted when they got 3rd place in town centre and 1st place winners in ASIAM inclusive community’s awards (National Winner) €2,000. The Town Centre First award results were:1st prize Carrickmacross Tidy Towns Co Monaghan, 2nd prize Carlingford Tidy Towns Co Louth and 3rd prize Balla Tidy Towns Co Mayo, bronze Medal plus €1,000. Balla increased their score by 13 points making an impressive 85 point improvement since 2019. A special thank you has been extended to each and every one of that made this tremendous achievement possible

Active Age Group

Members of the Clogher Active Age Group enjoyed a Halloween outing on last Wednesday. They started off with Bowling in Mayo Bowling Alley in Castlebar. This was followed by a trip to Horkan’s Garden Centre where they enjoyed seeing the Christmas Shop, did some shopping and then had a delicious lunch at the Bay Leaf Restaurant. Thanks to the wonderful staff at the Bowling Alley, Mary and staff at the Bay Leaf Restaurant and Dermot the bus driver. The next outing will be for Christmas.

Farming webinar

Teagasc, Mayo are delighted to announce that they are starting a new four part series of webinars which will begin on Thursday, November 14, from 8 to 9pm and the series will conclude on Thursday, December 5. Cemetery Prayer

Errew Community Committee has extended thanks to James Kilbane Music for supporting Errew’s newly restored community centre.

There are two shows scheduled on Sunday, November 17. The 6pm show is now fully booked but James has kindly offered to perform for an afternoon performance at 2pm as well. There are limited tickets available for the 2pm show. It will be an intimate afternoon of folk songs in support of the new centre. Annual Table Quiz

On Saturday, November 16, the annual Clogher table quiz and raffle will take place in the Drum Inn at 8.30pm. Tables of four will cost €40. The proceeds of the night will go towards the upgrading of the defibrillator at Clogher School. This is a very worthwhile cause, and the night is also always a very enjoyable social occasion. Visit of Santa Claus

On Sunday, December 15, Santa Clause will make his annual visit to the Santa Grotto at the Clogher Heritage Complex (F12PF99).
