Local Notes: Ballina Golf Club supports Paul's novel fundraiser

Members of Ballina Golf Club are pictured with Paul Kilcourse (front, fifth from left) during his stop off at the club recently. Paul was undertaking a challenge to raise funds for the Community First Responders and Order of Malta Castlebar in memory of his father, who died on Father’s Day 2025. The fundraiser included playing the first tee at ten Mayo golf courses on one day, cycling between all clubs, in all corners of the county, before finishing up in his hometown of Castlebar. A GoFundMe page is available through Paul’s social media pages.

College students will reprise ‘Stay Gold’

The platinum-quality production of the hit musical ‘Stay Gold’ took audiences by surprise when it was presented by the students of St Muredach’s College, Ballina in April. It made history by becoming the first musical ever staged by the Ballina boys’ secondary school, with a little help from the girls of St Mary’s Secondary School!

This thoroughly enjoyable and stunning show is returning to the stage next month when the talented young musical theatre performers will reprise their roles as a fundraiser in aid of Ballina Arts Centre’s new auditorium heating system.

‘The Outsiders’ was an award-winning musical first presented on Broadway in 2024, with the original inspiration for the show coming from a novel by S.E. Hinton called ‘The Outsiders’. In ‘Stay Gold’, the story and music has been specially adapted by St Muredach’s College to create a show full of music, energy and heart, brought to life by an excellent cast and crew.

The story of ‘Stay Gold’ follows the journey of Ponyboy Curtis, a thoughtful member of the Greasers gang trying to make sense of loyalty, identity and what it means to grow up in a world that seems stacked against him. Alongside his two brothers and his close group of friends, Ponyboy is drawn into events that will change their lives forever.

Through powerful songs and emotional storytelling, ‘Stay Gold’ explores friendship, courage, loss and the importance of holding on to goodness, even in the toughest moments.

Tickets for the two-hour show at 8pm on Tuesday, August 11 and Wednesday, August 12 are now on sale.

Tickets cost €22 plus booking fee and can be purchased online at www.ballinaartscentre.com. You can also call 096-73593 or email info@ballinaartscentre.com to book.
