Motorists are moving away from diesel

The survey was undertaken as part of Toyota Ireland’s ‘Make the Move’ advertising campaign.

According to research commissioned by Toyota Ireland, some 41% of drivers are planning to buy a hybrid electric or fully electric vehicle for their next car purchase, with 29% opting for hybrid electric and 12% to go fully electric.

Just 22% plan to buy a petrol car for their next vehicle, 15% say they will go diesel and 19% are unsure of their next move.

The survey was undertaken as part of Toyota Ireland’s ‘Make the Move’ advertising campaign aimed at encouraging motorists to shift away from diesel cars and move to a Toyota hybrid electric car.

The top three considerations for Irish drivers when buying a car are price (60%), followed by fuel efficiency (48%) and the size of the car (32%).

The research showed that 58% of drivers are motivated by the lower cost of running a hybrid than a diesel or petrol car. Only 14% chose environmental impact as their top consideration falling behind driving comfort (15%), engine size (16%) and appearance (22%).

The top concerns about going fully electric are price, the availability of charging points, and range when driving long distances whilst 37% are put off by perceived lengthy charge times. Toyota plan within the next few years to boost their BEV ranges up to 1,200km on a single charge and being able to charge from zero to 80% in just 10 minutes.
