Farmers ' in dread' of surprise inspections

Cllr Michael Clarke
Farmers are living in fear of the "dreaded farm inspection", according to Independent Ireland Cllr Michael Clarke.
Cllr Clarke, who is running in the upcoming general election in Sligo-Leitrim, said farmers are under immense stress from these surprise inspections.
"Officials, acting more like debt collectors, penalise them for issues without helping to resolve them. This makes no sense and contradicts the goal of ensuring farms are safe for people, animals, and the environment.
"Independent Ireland believes in a fair approach: when problems are found, the Department of Agriculture should support farmers with advice, grants, and time to fix the issue. Only if the problem persists should penalties be applied. This balanced approach will create a better working relationship between farmers and inspectors, focusing on improving standards without pushing farmers to the brink.
"Our policies will mandate a minimum 21-day notice for farm inspections and introduce a second-chance system to give farmers time to address issues. This is not negotiable, it's a red line for us going into government.
"We will also protect the suckler cow, oppose any forced rewetting of land, create a financial safety net for farmers, and introduce a new farm retirement scheme.
If you want a government that understands and respects farmers' livelihoods, VOTE for Michael Clarke and Independent Ireland. Together, we will restore dignity and security to farming communities.
