Mayo Senior Hurling Championship begins today

The Mayo Senior Hurling Championship gets underway this weekend, with Tooreen aiming to keep the TJ Tyrell Cup in Adrian Freeman Park for a sixth consecutive year.
In addition to the county championship, the Blue Devils won a record sixth Connacht club intermediate title with and reached the All-Ireland final before being beaten by Upperchurch-Drombane after extra-time.
They are now under new management following the departure of Mayo senior manager Ray Larkin, with Shane Morley appointed manager and Stephen Lenehan as head coach and they will look to continue the club’s recent dominance, beginning with an away tie against St Ciaran’s, who are an amalgamation of all the Mayo junior hurling clubs. Throw-in is in Ballyvary at 2pm.
Likely to stand in Tooreen’s way again is age old rivals Ballyhaunis, who travel to the county town to take on Castlebar Mitchels. That game also gets underway at 2pm and will be played in Josie Munnelly Park.
