Golf - Ormsby Cup

There was no shortage of theatre in this year’s Ormsby Cup, the club’s great Match Play pilgrimage where four groups of four set off on their 9-hole duels, every match a small saga of wits, nerve, and the odd muttered prayer to St Jude. From the group stages to the quarterfinals and on to the semis, the field thinned until only two remained for the 18-hole decider. In the end, James ‘Killer’ Kilroy lived up to the name that has followed him around fairways near and far. He closed out the final on the 17th, winning 2&1 over a gallant Michael Walsh, who fought him shot for shot until the final stretch. A hearty thank you to all who took part. And a special mention to Keith McHugh, whose steady hand kept the whole affair running as smoothly as a well-struck putt on a summer’s evening. The night was crowned as Brenda Ormsby presented the Ormsby Cup to the winner, James Kilroy.

Golfer of the Year

There was a grand gathering in the clubhouse on Saturday evening, November 8, as Swinford Golf Club wrapped up this year’s Golfer of the Year.

When the counting was done, Andy Murphy stood so far ahead of the field that even a Manchester City fan couldn’t complain about the margin. With 80 points to his name, he won it the way City often win most these days, early, often, and by a distance that left the rest of us gazing after him like lads watching a tractor disappearing over the hill.

In second place came Niall McHugh on 51 points, followed by Vincent Murtagh on 40 points, both solid throughout the long campaign.

A fine moment on the evening saw Gerry Ronayne present the trophy, named in honour of his late father Michael, a man held in deep respect around the club, to the champion Andy. Well done to everyone who took part over the year.
