Ladies in a league of their own

There were great celebrations at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence in Bekan following the victory of Moy Davitts GAA’s senior ladies team in the Mayo LGFA Division 2 Final. They got the better of Kilmoremoy by twelve points, 5-11 to 1-11, in the game which was played in beautiful conditions on Sunday, May 24.

It was a team performance of the truest kind, with five players contributing the five Moy Davitts goals, although special mention goes to Kate Byrne who was named as the official player-of-the-match afterwards and who scored a goal and four points from her corner-forward position. Adding to the achievement was that the winners had been forced to line out without their captain Sandra Hall because of injury.

The final scoreline might hint at a comfortable win, however, Moy Davitts only led by two points at the end of the third quarter before scoring 2-5 without reply between there and the finish.

Moy Davitts: E Galligan; S Loughney, R Conlon, E Dootson; B Roche, A McGahon, A Gaughan; T Hall, S Carney; D Towey, H Canavan, O McHale; K Byrne, N Gaughan, K Ruane. Subs used: S Wilson, C Coleman, N McNicholas.

S&F United news

A thrilling 4-4 draw was played out between S&F United and Ballina Town at Green Road in the MFL U17 Premier Division last week. Jamie Loughney had give the home side the lead in the 20th minute but by half-time it was the visitors who held a 2-1 lead. Ballina Town went 4-1 in front when adding two more goals inside five minutes of the restart, however, United came storming back to earn a share of the spoils through goals by Loughney again, Ronnie Deacy and Calum Costello, from the penalty spot.

The U17 Division 4 side was edged out by the odd goal in five away to Castlebar Celtic last week, twice coming from behind in the first-half before conceding again in the 55th minute. Dara Gaughan and Patrick O’Hara scored United’s two goals.

Meanwhile, the long trip to Belmullet was made worthwhile by S&F United’s U13 boys last week as they recorded a 4-2 win away to Iorras Aontaithe in the Mayo Football League.

Despite playing with the wind, S&F actually conceded the game’s opening goal but were back level by half-time. They dug deep in the second-half to go 4-1 ahead before the hosts pulled a goal back on the stroke of full-time.

Sean Lally scored twice for S&F while there was a goal apiece by Conor Ruddy and Ferdia McGreal.

The sides meet in Round 5 of AbbVie Mayo SFL Division 2, with Moy Davitts having picked up their first points of the campaign against Davitts last time out.

It was an impressive win in Foxford, 4-20 to 2-19, considering the visitors had lost just one of their opening four games.

Moy Davitts were aided by an excellent midfield display from Conor Reid, who scored 2-2 from play, while there were contributions of 1-3 apiece by Ryan Kenny and Brian Heneghan, 0-3 apiece by Colm McHale, Ronan Clarke and Brian Reape, and points by Padraig Ruane and Oisin McHugh.

Moy Davitts remain bottom of the table on two points but are just one point behind Hollymoount-Carramore.

Saturday’s game in 'The Saucer', Hollymount will throw in at 7pm.

Traffic consultation

Time is running out should you wish to have your say on proposed safety improvements at the pedestrian crossing in Foxford.

Mayo County Council intends to implement traffic calming measures at the junction of the N58 (Main Street), N26 (Chapel Road) and L5361 (Lower Main Street), a key element of which would be the removal of the existing right turn at O’Hara’s corner onto Chapel Road.

The proposed measures also include the upgrade and refurbishment of the existing pedestrian crossing on the N26, and footpath and kerbline alterations for junction tightening to all vehicular movements along with additional signage and road markings.

The proposed scheme may be inspected at https://consult.mayo.ie while hard copies are available from Mayo County Council offices in Castlebar. Submissions must be made by June 5, 2026.
