Carne Golf Links are heartbroken to learn of the recent passing of James Lacey. His booming laugh, his quick wit, and his natural ability to connect with people made him a standout presence on and off the course. James had a way of making everyone feel instantly welcome. Whether you were a regular or a first-time visitor, he found common ground, shared a story or a joke, and made you feel like you’d known him for years. That was his magic.
To Aishling, Hugo, his mother Olive, and all of James’s loved ones - we extend our deepest condolences. Please know that James made a lasting impact here, and we will remember him with great affection and gratitude always. James turned strangers into friends and a round of golf into something truly special.
James was a valued and active part of Belmullet Golf club, where he brought light and warmth to every gathering. His sharp wit, easy charm, and boundless charisma left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
James had a unique ability to make everyone feel welcome, always ready with a clever remark or a kind word. His presence was a constant source of joy and laughter, and his absence will be profoundly felt by all at Carne Golf Club.
Heartfelt condolences are extended to Aishling, Hugo, and the entire extended Lacey family during this difficult time.

Congratulations to club members on becoming two National Javelin medallists in Tullamore at the recent All-Ireland Track and Field championships. Emma Naughton is the U13 National Javelin Champion. She took first place with a superb PB of 32.11m with the 400g javelin - a throw that would have also won the U14 competition.
Niamh Walsh took home a silver medal in the U16 competition throwing 32.14m with the 500g, fantastic throwing from both girls.
There was a fantastic BBQ held in Teach Conghóile Stonefield recently. A little wind but stayed dry. The team cooked up a storm with burgers, chicken skewers, and hotdogs. It was great meeting so many old friends and making new ones. They had a visit from Mayo Co Council newly elected Cathaoirleach and local Councillor Sean Carey.
The event was rounded off with a raffle and words of thanks from the fundraising chairman. He thanked sponsors, hosts and supporters and also thanked the RNLI team who went above and beyond to make the day a huge success.
There was spot prizes from locals and food donated by local business and suppliers. Thanks to Garvin’s shop and Post Office in Carrowteige, Caroline and Ciaran Doherty, Nigel and Aoife McAndrew, Marie Naughton, Jack Lundy, O’Hara’s of Foxford and Michael Carr Foods.
‘With Ballyglass RNLI you know we will be there and we also know that you are all there for us’ said a spokesperson.
Deepest sympathies are extended to the family of James Lacey, Emlybeg North, Belmullet, and formerly of Luggacurren, Stradbally, Co. Sinn Féin TD for Mayo Rose Conway-Walsh has called on the government to introduce Adult Safeguarding Legislation in the wake of the shocking Prime Time investigation which exposed alarming levels of neglect in some Irish nursing homes. Teachta Conway-Walsh said; 'The sheer lack of compassion and respect shown to the residents in the program was appalling; I can only imagine their pain and that of their families. The exposé has led to serious questions about oversight and the government’s reliance on for-profit models of care, which inherently prioritize money over people. These shocking levels of neglect are the logical outworking of the commodification of care. Until we have adult safeguarding legislation then some of the most vulnerable and deserving human beings in our state are at risk of coercion, neglect and harm.' The Sinn Féin TD went on to praise front line staff in the sector saying; 'I want to commend the small family and community run nursing homes, many of whom I know in Mayo, who provide excellent care in a compassionate and appropriate way for elderly people. Most staff are kind and diligent, they rarely make the decisions that lead to a lack of the most basic things required for human dignity – pads, blankets, being taken to the toilet. Pay and conditions for this sector must be reviewed to ensure success in recruitment and retention. Zero hours contracts and minimum wages are not conducive to the intense care that needs to be provided’.

Goals were scored by Kyle Healy (18 and 64 minutes) and Cathal O'Malley in 54 minutes, which had them ahead 3-1 at one stage in the second half. But Castlebar Town made it 3-3 in the closing minutes. It was a very close and exciting game and after the game they were very disappointed after putting in very good display. Well done to all the squad and management on a great season.
