Local Notes: The Eugene McLoughlin Memorial Tractor Run, Charlestown, presentation of cheques.
The committee and the McLoughlin family, Barrack Street, Charlestown presenting a cheque to CROI to the value of €12,000 from the 11th Annual Eugene McLoughlin Memorial Run which was held in August last.
The Eugene McLoughlin Memorial Tractor Run Committee made their latest presentation to CROI and a number of local clubs following the hugely successful 2025 staging of an event that has become the highlight of the Charlestown Summer calendar since its inception in 2014. The event has grown immensely in the eleven years since and draws participants and crowds from far and wide and attracts support from all corners of the community and beyond. The committee held their recent presentation night and were happy to report that the whopping sum of €25,000 was raised from the 2025 event which is some going for a small community such as our own. The committee deserve great kudos and praise for their ongoing organisation, dedication and commitment as it continues to capture the imagination like no other and brings terrific atmosphere and life to the town not to mention the financial windfall it brings to local businesses as it generates some much needed cash flow and brings footfall to the town like no other event of its kind.
The committee presented €12,000 to CROI which does a huge amount of work in the area of Heart and Stroke management and prevention. The committee also donated €5,000 to the local East Mayo Athletics Club in recognition of the magnificent new facility the club are about to open with a state of the art running track and Astro pitch the culmination of years of hard work and dedication by a very ambitious and driven committee and group of people. The Eugene McLoughlin Memorial Run committee were only too delighted and thrilled to make this donation as it provides the youth and community with a facility that will provide so much fun and enjoyment to people for years into the future. They also donated €1,000 to the Kilbeagh First Responders who also provide a crucial service in the community, responding so promptly and willing to medical emergencies as well as ensuring the upkeep and maintenance of the many defibrillators in the local area. They also provide training courses in medical care and take responsibility for the upskilling of current and new members. The remainder of the monies raised covered all the entertainment and other expenses that were incurred on the day.
The committee and McLoughlin Family are deeply indebted to the community for their continued and sustained support of the event not just this year but over the course of the last eleven years. People have been steadfast in their support and the family and committee would also like to extend a sincere thanks to the many sponsors who have come up trumps in terms of prizes of all sorts for the raffles and auctions that also form a key part of the overall event. Deep gratitude to the people who act as stewards, volunteers and all the many other jobs that contribute to the success of the event, their support is invaluable and very much appreciated with the community as a whole rowing in wholeheartedly behind the event in memory of a husband, dad and father who was well liked and much respected by all in the town and beyond before his sudden and untimely passing.
A special word for the committee who have made an outstanding success of a concept that they first derived and came up with in 2014. They deserve all the praise in the world for their hard work and determination in making the event bigger and better year on year. They put in a huge shift in the organisation and planning with their work bearing fruit in spades as with the amount of money raised over the last fourteen years being well in excess of €100,000, €90,000 of which has gone to CROI with €25,000 going to local charities/clubs. This is an astounding achievement for a small and voluntary committee with all eyes on the 2026 version as they look to emulate and topple the success of 2025 which will be one hard task but one they are very much geared up for as the planning for 2026 has already begun.

Charlestown Sarsfields were pitted against near neighbours Kilmovee Shamrocks in a winner-take all County U20C championship fixture played at Fr O’Hara Park on Sunday last. The Sarsfields came into a game in a rich vein of form having seen off the challenges of Achill and Shrule/Glencorrib with ease and with home advantage this was surely going to be worth a few points to them with the visitors expected to bring plenty of fire and brimstone to what was anticipated to be a keenly contested encounter indeed with the noisy neighbours hoping to get one over on their more illustrious neighbours in a game which has plenty of plots and sub-plots around it. There will be a full report in next week’s issue as the two neighbours slugged it out with the small matter of a play-ff place awaiting the winners.

There was a good turnout at the weekly darts competition held in Walsh’s Bar, Main Street, Charlestown on Sunday, November 9, as Podsie and Boom Boom fought out another interesting instalment of the weekly classic. Governor Gus was tucked away in the referee’s hut and did his usual top class job ensuring both men towed the line impeccably. Podsie has dominated this head-to-head in recent times and once again put his opponent to the sword in the opening two sets with some sublime throwing. He hit his trebles and doubles with complete precision as Boom Boom just caved as he made to look redundant in the face of such an onslaught of high scoring from the top seed.
Boom Boom began the third set staring very much at a whitewash as Podsie, buoyed by his top-class form, looked to put the game to bed in three. Credit to Boom Boom he rallied and took the first two legs of the third against the darts to prolong the match a little longer for the large crowd who had flocked to the venue expecting fireworks. They were sorely disappointed however, as Podsie regained his poise and composure and rattled off three legs on the spin as only he can, thus closing out the match in three straight sets as he nailed double eighteen with his final dart in the fifth and deciding leg to complete another lopsided victory. Boom Boom had appeared in this movie many times and all he could do was offer his hand in congratulations with both men sharing a warm fist pump and a few nice words. Podsie took the acclaim of his large band of supporters as he stepped on the winner’s podium for a remarkable thirteenth time this season which sets him up nicely for the lucrative Christmas season with his game in terrific shape as he hones in on several more titles in the weeks ahead.
