County Junior Champions

Swinford Killasser emerged victorious following a hard-fought battle with Parke in the County Junior final on Sunday 5th October in Mc Hale Park, Castlebar, with a final scoreline of Swinford Killasser 2-14, Parke 2-12. Spectators were treated to a fantastic display of football, an end-to-end contest that will live long in the memory of the Swinford Killasser players and supporters. Swinford Killasser were one point up at half-time thanks to a superb goal and two points from Regina Mullaney and excellent points from Briana Fallon, Caitlin Henry, Rhona Brennan and Melissa Devanney. Sarah Rowley was instrumental in setting up these scores.

The Swinford Killasser backline were outstanding in the heat of battle with Orla Mullaney, Amy Dunleavey and Laura McLoughlin dominating their positions. Aoife Groarke, in goals, provided the kick-outs which gave Swinford Killasser the momentum. Emily Rowley, Aisling Hyland and Melissa Devanney in the half back line were sensational, cutting through the Parke defence time and time again and feeding the running duo of Anna Tierney and Ella Gallagher in midfield. Parke emerged in the second half full of fight and grit and were two points up with 12 minutes to go.

But then Swinford Killasser changed up a gear and played a superb last ten minutes of football. Niamh Casey won vital possession from the Parke kick outs. Regina Mullaney pointed a crucial free which sparked the comeback the supporters were waiting for. Hazel Lavin and Claudine Brennan were introduced off the bench and it paid dividends. Possession was now with Swinford Killasser and they were not going to give it up. Up stepped Briana Fallon who fired into the back of the net, following it up with a quick point to put Swinford Killasser in the driving seat. Parke responded with two points, but Swinford Killasser's Rhona Brennan put the game beyond doubt with a sublime last point. The Swinford Killasser girls used all their experience to keep possession in the dying minutes and when the final whistle blew the celebrations erupted on the pitch and in the stand. Swinford Killasser now march on to a Connacht quarter final on Saturday, October 18, at 1pm at Swinford Amenity Park against Leitrim opposition.
