Kiltimagh Knock United is celebrating two of its players winning All-Ireland titles. Siofra McGuinness was a member of the Mayo team that won the U15 SFAI Inter-League Cup, with Michaela Kavanagh goalkeeper on the U13 National Bowl winning team at the finals held in Kilkenny.
The death took place recently after a short illness at the Galway Clinic of Mary Kenny, Sliabh Cairn and formerly of Main St, Kiltimagh. Daughter of the late William and Kathleen Kenny and also predeceased by her brother Dermot, she will be sadly missed by her sister Ann, brothers John and Noel, brother-in-law John and sisters-in-law Brid and Rose and fondly remembered by her cousins, nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, friends and neighbours.
Having trained as a dietitian Mary worked as a demonstrator for Bolands Mills in Dublin travelling around the country for several years. However never a lady to stay rooted in one place, in later life she completely changed her lifestyle when she went to Scotland and trained as a nurse, qualifying when she was almost 50 years of age. Having worked at a London hospital for a time and a lady who was a good and caring person she left Ireland to help out the poor and disadvantaged in countries such as Sierra Leone, Angola, Romania and the Holy Land to name but a few.
Back home again she took a special interest in the Special Olympics and they have fond memories of Mary who volunteered with them, and gave so willingly of her time to support the athletes down through the years. Her encouragement, support and professionalism was always welcome and they said ‘they were blessed to have had Mary in their lives’.
Mary was a lady of great faith, strength and courage who had great devotion to Our Lady and was a regular visitor to Knock Shrine; she was also a Minister of the Eucharist at the weekend Masses in Kiltimagh for many years. She was very involved in the local community and was a lady who always spoke her mind and didn’t shirk away from the hard topics. Mary was blessed with an exceptional pair of hands; she was a master baker/cook and could produce delicious cakes, pastries, jams, etc. She was also an expert at sewing, knitting or making soft toys. She had a passion for gardening and her beautiful garden was much admired. You name it, Mary could do it.
Some years ago Mary took up the difficult game of Bridge and immediately became a great lover of the game. She was a popular member of the local club and attended the weekly game in the Park Hotel and was also a member of the Claremorris club and enjoyed the camaraderie of all her new found friends who were so saddened to hear of her death and will miss her presence at the bridge table. Mary had served as Vice President of the Kiltimagh club for the past year and was looking forward to taking over the role of President in the week that she suddenly passed away.
Mary was a well known and much admired lady in the locality who was kind and helpful to her friends, neighbours and, indeed, to anyone who needed help. The news of her unexpected death caused deep sadness and she will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her over the years.
A group of her Bridge colleagues formed a guard of honour on Chapel St as her funeral cortege made its way from her home in Sliabh Cairn to the Church of the Holy Family for the funeral Mass. Burial took place afterwards in Kilkinure Cemetery. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

It was with a deep sense of sadness and loss that the people of Kiltimagh learned of the recent death of Joan Elliott neé O’Shea, Gortgarve, Kiltimagh and formerly of Callan, Co Kilkenny. Joan passed away in the gentle and loving care of the staff at the Mayo Hospice, Castlebar. Joan was a highly respected lady in the community and beyond since she arrived in Kiltimagh from England, where she had met and married her beloved husband Joe Elliott, who sadly passed away suddenly two years ago. Joe worked for Genfitt for many years and he and Joan were good friends of the late Larry McEllin.
In her early years in England, Joan worked as a nanny for the Danish Ambassador, travelling with the family to Denmark and other places around Europe which she enjoyed. She later did a catering course, which she utilised and worked at for many years. She was a loving and caring lady who enjoyed her life in Kiltimagh and became involved in the community, always ready to help out. Joan was a lovely lady, kind and gentle, and a very good neighbour and friend who will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her over the years.
Predeceased by her parents William and Kathleen O’Shea, Callan, Co Kilkenny, she will be sorely missed by her loving sons Tommy and Joseph, daughters-in-law Kelley-Anne and Yong, grandchildren Jamie-Lee and George, friends and neighbours. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.
Joan reposed at O’Hora’s Funeral Home on Monday evening, May 6, with her Funeral Mass at the Church of the Holy Family, Kiltimagh the next day, followed by Cremation in Shannon Crematorium. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

In a closely contested match played in ideal conditions in Aghamore last week it was a game that could have gone either way with the minimum between the teams at the final whistle. However it was Aghamore who came on top in the end with a score of 5-14 to Kiltimagh’s 4-16.
Kiltimagh defeated Kilmaine on the score of 2-12 to 0-11 in the Mayo Senior League 2A in a game played last Sunday morning in Gilmartin Park.
