Local notes: FACT givers at Mayo Older Persons AGM

The Foxford Alzheimer’s Community Trust (FACT) is to deliver a presentation at the Mayo Older Persons Council AGM and Information Day which is taking place next Monday, September 7 in the TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar.
The Mayo County Age Friendly Programme with the support of Mayo’s Older People’s Council has been operational for several years and continues to grow from strength to strength.
Foxford Alzheimer’s Community Trust is among the special guests on the day, with Dr. Mark Garavan and SAGE Advocacy also among the contributors.
Information stands from various services and supports available to the older population in Mayo will also be present on the day. The event is free and will run from 10am to 2pm, with registration underway from 9.30am.

Moy Davitts will aim to secure a home quarter-final in the Egan Jewellers Mayo Intermediate Football Championship when taking on Lahardane MacHales in the final round of the group stages next weekend. Having won both their opening matches against Louisburgh and Davitts, a draw would suffice to see them top their group. The game against Lahardane is fixed for Saturday, September at St Joseph’s Park in Knockmore. Throw-in is at 6.30pm.
Congratulations are extended to the minor footballers who qualified for the ‘D’ county championship final that was due to be played last Sunday evening. They advanced past Hollymount-Carramore by eight points (4-13 to 2-11) in their semi-final to book a showdown with Crossmolina Deel Rovers. The team is managed by Brian Hughes, Michael McHale, Keith Tolan and Brendan Knox.
Yesterday evening (Monday), Moy Davitts were also set to contest the county U14 ‘C’ shield final against neighbours Swinford.
The death occurred on Saturday last, August 29, of Martin Neary, Gurraunard, Straide. Martin, who was predeceased by his parents Winifred and Andrew, his sisters Margaret and Eileen and his brother Patrick (Pake), passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family and the caring staff of Swinford District Hospital.
He is deeply regretted by his sister Mary and his brother Andrew, his nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and his wide circle of friends.
Martin lay in repose at Clarke's Funeral Home, Foxford on Sunday evening before removal to his residence. His funeral Mass was celebrated in Sts Peter and Paul’s Church, Straide yesterday (Monday) with burial afterwards in Straide Old Cemetery.
May he rest in peace.
Participation and support is sought for the Backs Parish Tractor, Vintage and Vehicles Run which is to take place in Knockmore on Sunday, September 13. Registration is at 11am and the fee per motorised vehicle is €20. An auction will also take place at 12.15pm, with all proceeds from the day going to the parish funds.
Congratulations are extended to Amanda and Martin, Foxford and Westport, on the baptism of their son Martin Tadgh O’Connell Quinn at St Michael’s Church, Foxford on Sunday, August 16.
It was a very busy week for S&F United teams on all fronts. Pride of place goes to the U16 boys who booked their ticket to the Mayo U16 Boys Cup Final thanks to a 2-1 win away to Castlebar Celtic in last Wednesday night’s semi-final. Calum Costello and Patrick O’Malley scored the goals in what was described as a game for the ages. It was the team’s second win of the week as they had also been in action in the Mayo U16 Premier Division where they beat visiting Westport United 2-1 thanks to goals by Rian Jordan and Michael Ruane.
There was also a commanding performance from S&F United’s U18 boys who hammered Claremorris AFC 9-0 at Green Road. James Duffy, Donnacha Timlin and Patrick O’Hora scored two goals apiece while Brady Guilfoyle, David McHale and Sean Walsh were also on target.
Meanwhile, S&F United also drew 3-3 with Iorras Aontaithe in the Mayo U14 Premier Division, coming from behind thanks to goals by Cathal Timlin, Heath Byrne and Oisín McHale.
Also at U14 level, there was also a tremendous 4-2 victory for the girls team at home to Kilmurry in the league on Thursday, where Kayleigh McDermott struck a hattrick and Zoe Corcoran scored the other goal.
The U12 girls were also in action on the double. Dianiamh Burke scored in their 3-1 cup defeat at home to Ballinrobe Town but they bounced back two evenings later with Dianiamh Burke again on the scoresheet as they secured a 1-1 draw in the league away to Partry Athletic.
S&F United’s senior women’s team brought the curtain down on their Mayo Premier League campaign with a 2-0 defeat against Castlebar Town.
Davy McHale from Foxford was the winner of the €100 jackpot in last week’s S&F United 50-50 draw. The club is appreciative of the support of all who buy tickets for the weekly draw both in local outlets and online at smartlotto.ie and remind patrons that season tickets are always available from all committee members where you gain entry to 52 draws for €50.

A great source of revenue to the parish church in Foxford every year is the Tax Rebate Scheme, where any taxpayer who contributes €250 or more to the parish collections in the year is eligible. The forms for signing up are available at the church porches. All, regulars and newcomers, are invited to take a form and sign it and drop it in to the parochial house in the next few weeks.
Congratulations to Marian McDermott who won the significant sum of €1117 in last week’s Moy Davitts GAA 50-50 draw and to Margaret McHale who won a jackpot of €653 in the previous week’s draw. Club officials wish to thank everyone who supports the draw. Tickets are available in the usual retail outlets and by playing on the Moy Davitts club app.
The recent Riverfest Open Spey Casting competition was won by Michael Kane with a cast of 185 feet with Martin Kiely finishing in second place and Garret Ridroc in third.
The Waterkeepers Trophy was also played for over the course of two and a half days (August 21-23) on the River Moy, the presentations for which took place in Guiry’s Bar. First place went to Steve Sowrey with two fine fish, one of which weighed in at double figures. The junior winner was Harry Prendergast with a salmon landed in the final minutes of the competition.
Foxford Angling Club also held the Mike Tiernan Memorial trout fishing competition on Lough Conn and it was special that young Mike’s father Michael was the overall winner having landed six trout. In second place was Stephen Brown and third went to Mike’s uncle PJ Tiernan.
Meanwhile, fishing conditions on the Moy have remained challenging. Only eight salmon were reported caught for the week-ending Sunday, August 23 and three of those were during the aforementioned Waterkeepers Trophy competition.
