Belmullet Tidal Pool

A huge thank you to everyone who continues to support the ongoing efforts to keep Belmullet Tidal Pool a safe and welcoming space for all whether you are enjoying a swim or heading out on a jet ski or boat.

Special appreciation goes to Cllr. Sean Carey and Michael O'Boyle, head of Marine at Mayo County Council for securing funding for the safety buoys, a vital part of keeping waters safe for everyone, and to Peter Hefferon and Rachel McBride for their hard work putting the buoys in place and replacing them so quickly after storm Éowyn. These buoys help to mark a safe route that open water swimmers can stay inside, and engine watercrafts stay outside.

This is a shining example of what can be achieved when the community comes together. Your efforts don’t go unnoticed, thank you all. Thank you also to Darren Forde, Eco Powered Cabinets for providing this kit to add to the Solar Powered Defib cabinet.

Belmullet Tiday Pool are delighted to have this lifesaving equipment so close to hand in Shore Road. Erris Defib do so much valuable voluntary work in the Erris area to ensure that the communities have a defibrillator close by. They maintain them keeping a watchful eye on them and arrange training for many community members.

Ballyglass RNLI

Both the Bryan and Gordon ALB and Clann Lir ILB were requested by Malin Head Coast Guard to launch recently. A report of a missing kayaker who had failed to make contact with his friend on shore alerted the emergency services. The pagers were activated at 17.13 and both crews promptly proceeded to the location of last sighting which was Portacloy beach.

While en route there was a reported sighting of an individual on rocks. This brought hope to all involved in the search. Soon after the inshore crew were stood down with confirmation by the Garda Síochána that the casualty was safe and well and on terra firma again.

Meanwhile the crew of the Bryan and Gordon were requested by Malin Head Coast Guard to retrieve the upturned kayak from the sea as it would be a hazard to navigation. From the coordinates of the first sighting it had travelled approximately two miles. Thanks to Sligo Search and Rescue helicopter 118 for getting a visual on the craft.

The ALB returned to Ballyglass and were back ready for service at 18.45. The ILB was back and ready for service at 18.15. For the evenings callout the ALB was under command of Francie Gibbons and the ILB was under command of Matthew Togher. There were 8 crew and 4 shore crew involved in the tasking.

Minister launches Baile Gaelach Bheal an Mhuirthead

Baile Gaelach Bhéal an Mhuirthead was launched by the Minister for Social Protection, Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary, TD, in Áras Inis Gluaire in Belmullet on Monday evening, June 23, which begins the process to prepare an Irish Language Plan for Belmullet and to have Belmullet recognised as a Gaeltacht Service Town.

As part of a Department of the Gaeltacht initiative, based on Acht na Gaeltachta (2012), Béal an Mhuirthead is endeavouring to achieve recognition as a Gaeltacht service town. A plan is being prepared for the year 2026/33 and is of the utmost importance for the Erris Gaeltacht. Language planning for Irish is about promoting the spoken and written language and involves a language planning process that aims for: an increased use of Irish in the community generally; an increased number of daily speakers of Irish of all ages; it encourages the use of Irish as the language of households. There will be further and varied supports for adults reviving their Irish or indeed starting to learn for the first time. An increased variety and amount of community and Youth activities through Irish. The use and the learning of Irish within pre-schools, primary and second level schools by providing support for the teachers.
