The North Mayo Pyrite Group is inviting homeowners who have been impacted by defective concrete blocks to an open meeting in the Merry Monk, Killala Road, Ballina this evening, Tuesday, March 26, at 7pm.

Members of the general public are also welcome to come along to support the victims in their quest for justice, as the group continues to demand that the rights of homeowners are addressed.

The group says that homeowners have engaged with the Government on two separate schemes, neither of which have resulted in an effective solution for these homeowners to fully remediate their homes. It also said that there was a commitment by the Government to review the scheme six months after launch, but that three months on from that date no review has yet taken place.

Among the difficulties being faced by the affected homeowners are a lack of affordable, temporary accommodation, the rejection of homes onto the scheme due to the damage threshold, and no advance funding to manage the cost of engineer fees, which can run to €15,000. There have been delays too with the progression of new entrants on to the scheme.

The North Mayo Pyrite Group points out that there are also homeowners who are not yet aware of the threat inside their own four walls, as well as significant numbers of vital assets in the community left outside of the scheme such as boundary walls, garages, creches, holiday homes, partially built homes and farm buildings.
