Wednesday, September 17, saw the launch of the Transatlantic Connections Exhibition at the Croke Park Museum, Dublin. The exhibition explores the powerful cultural and sporting ties between Ireland and North America, through the stories of athletes, communities, and families who carried traditions across the Atlantic. One highlight is the display on Swinford man, Martin Hennigan, whose handball career took him from Cloonfinish to success at the highest levels of the sport in both Ireland and the US. Martin won the All-Ireland Novice Championship in 1979. He dominated the 1980s with victories in 40x20 and 60x30. He represented Ireland at the US Nationals.
Martin became the first Irish player to win the prestigious 40x20 Top Ace title which was held in the United States since the competitions commencement in 1973. To this day he is the only Mayo man to have won the All-Ireland Senior Singles championship in the 40x20. His achievements, dedication, and legacy are proudly celebrated as part of this exhibition.
