Local Notes: Family tradition alive and well in Ballyglass RNLI

Congrats and well done to sister and brother Kayley and Brandon Geraghty, members of Ballyglass RNLI, who recently attended and successfully completed their crew emergency procedures course in the National Maritime College of Ireland, Ringaskiddy, Co Cork. They are continuing a proud family tradition.
What another fantastic day of heritage, community, craic, ceol and the amazing Bernie Rowe's special 'Baileys' coffees at Ballyglass RNLI stand on Main Street in Belmullet recently. Go raibh míle maith agaibh and millions of thanks to all those who supported the RNLI on the day and always.
The spirit of Erris is alive and very well and stronger than ever. An extra special day also as both Belmullet town and the RNLI are celebrating 200 years in existence this year.
A special mention for all who volunteer in any capacity with Ballyglass RNLI, another of the best community families, along with Belmullet Tidal Pool Shore Road and many others who strive to make Erris and beyond a better and safer place.
Congratulations and well done to sister and brother Kayley and Brandon Geraghty, from Belmullet, who recently attended and successfully completed their crew emergency procedures course at the National Maritime College of Ireland Ringaskiddy, Co Cork.
They completed their PPE (personal protection equipment) and ILB (inshore lifeboat) search and rescue layout units and are now safe to go afloat on exercises, etc. They are well on their journey to joining another brother Ryan on the inshore lifeboat at Ballyglass RNLI.
It is fantastic to see the strong family connections and commitment to the lifeboat family as their uncle Frankie Geraghty (station mechanic) and his son Eric had served for many years on the crew at Ballyglass RNLI. It's a tradition alive and well, not only at Ballyglass RNLI but also in many RNLI stations throughout Ireland and the UK. The sea is in the blood, as they say, and more importantly, they have the willingness and bravery to add to their knowledge, skills and experience by joining the RNLI as a volunteer so they can be ready and highly trained to save lives at sea and selflessly be on call 24/7. Maith sibh!
Well done and keep up the good work.
The annual Jonathan Shevlin Memorial Game will be held this Saturday evening, September 7th, at 4pm in St Brendan’s College GAA pitch. All proceeds go to North West STOP, the counselling and addiction service (Erris branch).
A huge thank you to all the team at The Talbot for their very kind and generous donation to the Erris branch of North West STOP!
The staff team donated their tips from Fair Day and Heritage Day and this was kindly matched by Tommy and Orla Talbot. An amazing €1,200 was added to the pot for the delivery of this free counselling service in our area. The amount raised from the Sunset4STOP walk was €3,680, and adding the donation from The Talbot the final total is €4,880. Thank you to everyone who has supported this service!

There was an eight-goal thriller for Kilmore United against Kiltimagh Knock Utd (B) recently, but the scoreline only tells half the story!
Another away day that was challenging to put a team together but they found a way as always. A much-changed side again that needed time to settle in and after half an hour they were 2-0 down, both scores from Byrne.
The Kilmore lads finally did settle though and P. Sweeney popped up to powerfully header home and brilliant Flatley corner. This breathed much-needed life into the team as they went in at half-time 2-1 down.
The second half started with KK having more urgency as they really needed to win this game to avoid relegation. It looked like it was going to be a comfortable three points when Byrne rattled in another quick-fire double to put KK 4-1 up.
Then the moment of absolute genius from the management team arrived... they decided to put on themselves!
Lenny Gilbert, who was already on from the start, was still battling away then on came Kieran Gallagher. Ten minutes later, it was 4-2 when Shane Kennedy got on the end of a Flatley cross. Then like a phoenix from the flames, the third member of the management team arrived on the pitch as Sean Ruane entered the fold and went straight up front like a Wayne Rooney!
Within minutes, Ruane laid a ball off to his skipper Brogan who played in a fine ball to the far post for Caobhlin Flatley to slot it home to make the scoreline 4-3.
Kilmore could really smell blood at this stage and when they won a free out wide on the left it looked like there might be one more twist to this dramatic encounter... and how right we were! Flatley floated the ball in and it kept going and over the head of the keeper to make it 4-4. Eleven goals in 11 games for Caobhlin this season which is a fantastic return.
Commiserations to KK who will now be relegated to League 1 as a result. Congratulations to the Kilmore lads as this was a tough trip with a much-depleted panel and to continue battling from 4-1 down showed serious character.

Many of you in the Erris United prediction game were surprised at how well Ireland did in the Olympics. They secured a medal a day for seven straight days. Well done to McSharry, Wiffen, Harrington, Lynch and Doyle, McCarthy and O'Donovan, McCleneghan and Wiffen again.
It has put Conan in the lead with three events to go, namely the Mayo Senior Football Championship, Baseball and Fast Cars.
Did you predict Belmullet, Braves and Bottas, or Mayo Gaels, Mets and Max or maybe Knockmore, Knicks and Nico (Okay, that's enough alliteration).
It's wide open in the prediction game and big money prizes are at stake. Thank you to Platt & Reilly and Belbridge Structures for their much-appreciated sponsorship. With Conan Reilly in poll position on 109, Kian Gallagher on 107 and Katie Keane in third also on 107, there is lots to play for and nobody would be brave (or foolish) enough to predict the outcome!
