The first meeting will be an informal meet up, to chat, connect and explore the kind of support that would be most helpful for the group going forward. This is an opportunity to gain information and support, but also to be part of shaping this new group.

Please join the group on Tuesday, June 16, from 7 to 8.30pm at the IWA Centre, F26VY42. For more information or to register your interest, contact Leanne on 087-0670989.

International boxing for Geesala

International boxing is coming to Geesala on next Sunday, June 14, hosted by Geesala Boxing Club in association with Mayo Boxing Board. Ireland v Italy will take place in the Erris Coast Hotel with the first bout at 3.30pm. Doors open at 3pm.

Film at Áras Inis Gluaire

A new Irish film exploring community resilience and childhood innocence during one of Dublin’s darkest periods will be screened at Áras Inis Gluaire on this Thursday, June 11, at 8pm with a special local connection drawing added interest.

Spilt Milk, directed by Brian Durnin, is set in the 1980s' inner city Dublin and follows 11-year-old Bobby O’Brien and his friend Nell as they run a makeshift detective agency inspired by Kojak. When Bobby’s older brother Oisín disappears, the pair are pulled into a troubling investigation that forces them to confront the harsh realities of adult life.

Adding a strong local dimension to the screening is the performance of Cillian Sullivan, who plays Bobby O’Brien.

Cillian, who lives in Newbridge, is son of Frank Sullivan and Deirbhle McGrath from Portacloy.

His previous credits include the Irish TV series Sullivan Sails. Following Spilt Milk, he went on to portray Steve Sondheim in the Oscar nominated Blue Moon. More recently he has appeared in the short films, The Things We Do and A Song and has completed filming a new Irish feature Silverback.

Spilt Milk will be screened at Áras Inis Gluaire on this Thursday, June 11 at 8pm.

Ballyglass RNLI

The Erris Inver NS swimming event in the Tidal Pool at Shore Road was held recently to raise funds for Ballyglass RNLI. A million thanks to the parents, teachers and students and to Michelle Healy the Water Safety Officer.

There is nothing to compare to what was happened at the Tidal Pool. A community at its best, all ages, coming together to have fun and fun it was.

Huge thanks to the fundraising team for attending and for members of the Ballyglass RNLI crew who attended and participated in a few laps.

The intended goal was 10km, but in true Erris fashion, this was smashed very early on, and by mid-day, the count was close to 30km. From 11am swimmers started clocking up the kilometres, including a great effort from the team at Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club who were in the pool early on.

Visitors to the area couldn’t believe what was happening when they asked and were told. They stood and admired as the fog and mist shrouded the place but did not deter the swimmers, helpers and all who came in support.

A special word of thanks to Margaret Healy Coyle, the driving force for the event. Huge thanks also to Red Connolly who played guitar and sang as the swimmers clocked up mileage pool side. The feeling of community, fun, enjoyment and all round camaraderie was epic in Erris on the today.

The team from Inver retired to the Lighthouse Tavern for music with Michael S and some well-earned refreshments.

There was also a very successful BBQ at Teach Chonghóile in Stonefield recently. The annual fundraiser was held in Connolly’s.

Special thanks to the sponsors - Noreen Doherty, Caroline, Ciaran Doherty and family, Aoife McAndrew from Lír Beauty Rooms, Calpin’s Country Fryer, Lorraine Connolly, and O’Hara’s of Foxford for a beautiful party box.

Huge thanks to all for supporting the event, for donations, buying tickets, thanks to the raffle prize winners who kindly donated back their prizes for RNLI service. Special mention to Kyle Gallagher who made a great effort with the donation bucket, always a great supporter.

A special mention to the fundraising team who worked tirelessly to make everything run smooth and successful.

Connolly’s BBQ was the brainchild of the late Derek Connolly who was an ardent supporter of Ballyglass RNLI service. It is great to see it continuing to grow.

Congratulations to Padraig Deane, Glenamoy who recently retired from An Post after 42 years of dedicated service as a postman in the Glenamoy and Rossport area. Wishing Padraig a happy retirement and every success for the future.

Athletic Club

Congratulations to Erris AC's Niamh Walsh, representing St Brendan's College, Belmullet, on winning bronze at the National Irish Schools Athletic Association Championships in Tullamore recently. Niamh competed in the Intermediate Girls Javelin competition.

It is the first national medal ever for St Brendan’s College in athletics having only signed up with the Association in recent years.

Ballycroy Sports Hub

Over the coming weeks and months, Ballycroy Sports hub will be reaching out to hear your thoughts on the types of activities and programmes the Sports Hub could consider exploring for the Ballycroy area. Whether you're already active or just thinking about getting started, they’d love to hear from you.

As a first step, they’ve put together a short community survey that you will find online.

The more responses they get the better picture they’ll have of what the community is looking for. They would also love to get input from people in neighbouring areas and communities who would be interested in participating in activities as part of the sports hub.
