Local Notes: Eoghan Rua Ladies team of 2010 honoured at annual awards night.

Some of the members of the Eoghan Rua Ladies Football team from 2010 who were honoured at the annual Eoghan Rua Club Awards night which were held on March 16, in the Ocean Sands Hotel, with special guest Galway hurler Joe Canning.
In 2010 Eoghan Rua won its first ever adult title. Eoghan Rua had been formed a few years before this but it was only in their 2nd year after having being formed from ‘Castleconnor’ to ‘Eoghan Rua’ that they won their first piece of championship silverware.
A championship that started with playing the eventual finalists, Calry on what can only be described as a scalder of a day. Being narrowly defeated by them, turned into a year that changed the clubs history by beating Drumcliffe, St Michael’s and CT Gaels. The final against Calry was led on the pitch by co-captains Colley Casey and Niamh Jacob. It was a team event that to this day would be hard bet.
Brendan Knox and Kieran Holmes were the management at the time, with Sheila Murphy keeping all at bay as well as Yvonne Flynn. Michelle ‘Twiggy’ Taylor was minding the back line while ‘Mammy’ Noreen was firing over points in the forward line. Aisling McDonagh, Aisling and Aoife Jacob all popped over scores for that final as Sarah Murphy, Laura Jacob and Andrea Feeney all insured that no ball went too far behind them in the backline.
It was also the start of adult football for teenagers Claire Duffy and Elisha Queenan, while a young Joanne McDonnell, Orna O’Dowd and Louise Lindsay, who all had a few years put in at this stage, were all part of this historical day. The club are delighted to see these five girls still lining out for the adult teams 15 years later.
This group of women are the reason why the club is as inspiring as it is today, and without them the club couldn’t have been as successful. Some of them have gone on to do great things outside of the club, Niamh and Colley making names in Dublin clubs over the year, Aine Coleman who is running marathons all over the world, Yvonne is heavily involved in the Western Gales Hurling club, and Michelle Taylor is still keeping the sticks safe in the Irish hockey team, Lorraine and Sarah are educating the girls in local schools and Lorraine is also very involved in the convents football team. Orna O’Dowd has been a pro soccer player and is also very involved with Sligo Rovers while Joanne and Louise both did stints abroad playing and flying the flag for Eoghan Rua in their new clubs before returning home.
These girls have gone on to get married, have children and start a new chapter in their lives outside Eoghan Rua but the club must remember where it all started and who was there flying the flag from the very beginning and passing it on as the years go on.
