Local Notes: Enniscrone student gets 2nd place in the Law Society of Ireland Essay Awards.

Congratulations has been extended to Jack Wu, a student of Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, who came 2nd place overall winning €500 and a trophy in the Law Society of Ireland Essay Awards in Dublin, last week. Well done to Ellie and Aoibhe who also took part in the competition and to their teachers Ms McLoughlin and Ms O’Dowd. It was a proud day for the school to be represented so well at this All-Ireland prestigious event.
Under the Active Travel Funding for SRTS (Safe routes to school) Sligo County Council will be undertaking roadworks to the roads at the front and rear of the school. This will involve disruptions to traffic and details of changes to the traffic flow will be announced closer to the time by the council and school, when information is available.
The Safe Routes to School Programme is designed to encourage as many pupils and students as possible in primary and post-primary schools to walk and cycle. It has three aims; to accelerate the delivery of walking/scooting and cycling infrastructure on key access routes to schools; to provide ‘front of school’ treatments which will enhance access to the school grounds; and to expand the amount of bike parking available at schools.
The programme which was launched in March 2021 is an initiative of the Department of Transport and supported by the Department of Education. It is operated by the Green Schools Programme in partnership with the National Transport Authority (NTA) and the local authorities.
Changes that are proposed is to introduce a one-way system (N-S) along Pier Road, as proposed in the Enniscrone LAP 2014-2020; road width reduction and space to be re-allocated for active travel; coloured surfacing applied within school zone (buff colour HPS); bollards on footpath verge within school zone to prevent parking near the school entrances; controlled raised crossings on Pier Road and Cliff Road to link bus parking; continuous footpath at entrance to Castle Field from Pier Road to give pedestrian priority; gateway to school zone; school road markings at school zone gateway; gateway totem on each side of the road; resurface laneway into the back entrance; new footpath along school side of Pier road; new footpath into school front entrance; create build-out at the back entrance to link the pedestrian crossing to bus parking area; continue to use allocated spaces along Cliff Road; and create new entrance to staff parking along Cliff Road.
Congratulations has been extended to Kelly Greer, first year student of Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, who was selected as a junior finalist in the ATHE/St Angela’s Sligo Healthy Home Chef competition. Kelly was one of only sixteen junior finalists chosen for the All-Ireland (North and South) cookery competition, which took place on Tuesday, April 30 last. Kelly had to prepare, cook and serve her dish for a panel of expert judges including award-winning chef Neven Maguire.
The Healthy Home Chef competition gives students an opportunity to create tasty, healthy and affordable meals at home. All entrants were required to submit a healthy main course dish. The competition was open to all post-primary schools and Youthreach Centres in the Republic and North of Ireland.
Enniscrone Parish Pastoral Council has selected B Kilcullen Construction Ltd to complete remedial work on the flat roof to the front of Ennisrone Church which is leaking badly. This work will involve insulating the exterior roof, improving water drainage off the roof and covering the new insulation with new asphalt. This work will cost in the region of €40,000.
The ceiling of the front flat roofed area of the church will need to be replaced and new light fittings installed which will involve a further cost. B Kilcullen Construction hopes to complete this work within a number of weeks. As the parish has limited finances, they would welcome donation towards the cost of completing this work. Put your donation in an envelope marked ‘Church Repairs’ and drop into the weekly collection bag or in the collection box off the main aisle in the church.
The numbers drawn in the Enniscrone combined football clubs weekly draw which was held on April 28, were 15, 25 and 26. There was no jackpot winner. €25 prizewinners were Karen O’Hara, Jimmy Tighe, John Barrett and Jack and Ruth McDonnell. The jackpot for the latest draw which was held on Sunday, May 5, in McNulty’s Bar was €3800.

The U8 and U10 stars of Eoghan Rua Ladies Football Club are back training in Stokane Community Park on Saturday mornings from 10-11am. If your child would like to get involved with the club, contact through private message on their Facebook page.
Toilets in both the Hallow and at the Pier will remain open for the rest of the summer after Sligo County Council agreed a contract with a cleaning company to maintain them. Thanks has been extended to all the volunteers who helped over the winter months keeping the toilets open.

Whether it’s for flexibility, core strength or relaxation, join the West Sligo Young at Heart, Dromore West, on a Monday from 11am to 12 noon for chair yoga (they don’t only sit down, unless you choose to). If you are feeling more energetic, they have a variety of exercises and activities on Tuesday from 11am to 12 noon, whether it’s walking football, netball or kurling, a good laugh followed by a chat over tea. On Wednesday, from 10.30-12.30 there is always something different going on from sewing, crochet, to darts or cards and plenty more, all with the most important chat, tea and great company. There is also plenty of books available to keep you reading at home.
The annual general meeting will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, May 8, after their activities. People are encouraged to come along and hear the plans, all ideas and involvement will be gratefully received.
Lorraine Kilgannon is running a three week Skincare and Makeup Workshop at West Sligo Family Resource Centre for both adults and teens with the adults week two workshop continuing on Tuesday, May 7, and the teens workshops starting on Tuesday, May 21. Week 1 will cover a full skin care routine; week 2, make up routine and week 3, people bring their own make up and get tips on what works best. Bingo is held in the Old Church, Enniscrone, every Tuesday at 8pm with doors opening at 7pm with free tea and coffee on offer. The proceeds are in aid of Western Gaels Hurling and Camogie Club. All are welcome to come along and support and be in with a chance to win.
