Sr Mary Kelly retires after 29 years of service

Deputy Principal of Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, Ms Hamilton, led tributes to Sr Mary Kelly on the occasion of her retirement after the remarkable achievement of 29 years of service as principal in the school.

‘Sr Mary’s dedication and high expectations have led to the realisation of her vision for the school and she leaves a lasting legacy here. Sr Mary has ensured there is a warm and positive environment, where all feel welcome and included, and where students are encouraged and supported to achieve their full potential. She always placed a strong emphasis on the personal development of our students in all aspects of their lives, not just academically, but also, on the recognition and celebration of the individual gifts, talents and circumstances of each young person. Her work towards developing a place of creativity and innovation is a central philosophy in our school prioritising constant adaption to suit the needs of our students’.

Ms Hamilton continued by saying ‘Sr Mary has always worked to make certain that people are respected and treated fairly and feel part of the Jesus and Mary family, here in Enniscrone, and also in the wider world. Everyone is encouraged to look out for each other, to look after each other, our planet and those more vulnerable than ourselves. Her stewardship meant that together, with all of the staff and the wider school community, we are committed to being an integrated, educational community, empowering our students to make mature choices and preparing them for their future lives. We will continue to follow Sr Mary’s example and strive to give our students the necessary support and guidance so they will grow and develop into loving, caring and kind people. We thank Sr Mary for all her dedication, hard work and loyal service to our school and wish her the very best in her retirement’.

Sr Mary then thanked everyone for the generous support received over the years from students, parents, staff, her Jesus and Mary community and management.

An evening about mental health

An evening about mental health will be held in Summerhill College, on Friday, May 24. Redmond and Geraldine Murphy, from Curry, Co Sligo are parents to three boys – Red Og, Daithi and Oisin. In April 2022, Red Og died by suicide. He was a footballer, a son, a student teacher and plenty more besides. Since his death, it has been important to the Murphy family that mental health becomes a more widespread topic of conversation, particularly among young people. As part of their efforts to keep the issue to the forefront of people’s minds, they have organised an evening in Summerhill College on Friday, May 24.

The panel has been especially chosen, since Red Og’s life was immersed in sport, the mental health journeys of high-level sportspeople is the particular focus. Ocean FM presenter Austin O’Callaghan will be the compere on the night and the speakers are; Alan Quinlan, former Munster and Ireland rugby player, mental health advocate; Philly McMahon, former Dublin footballer, mental health and resilience speaker; Caroline Currid, one of Ireland’s foremost sports psychologists, won All Irelands with Limerick and Tipperary in hurling, Dublin and Tyrone in football; Rory O’Connor, the man behind Rory’s Stories, comedian and mental health advocate.

The event is free and the aim of the eventing is to give people hope. It is for the young people of Sligo and beyond, whether they are involved in sport or not, whether they find themselves with mental health issues or not. It is for the parents too, anyone who thinks it might be useful to their situation is more than welcome to come along.

They want people to come and hear what the panellists have to say. More than that, there will be Q&A and they very much want people to ask any questions they want to. Help is out there – if this event helps one person and changes the direction they might find themselves on, it will be a success. To attend, you will only need to register online to give the organisers an idea on numbers. But as stated before, admission is free and there will be no bucket-shaking at the door.
