Local Notes: Claremorris student wins musical award

All at Claremorris GAA expressed their sincere condolences to the family of legendary GAA commentator Micheál Ó Múircheartaigh who sadly passed away last week.
The club were delighted when Micheál accepted their invitation to officially open their redeveloped clubhouse in February 2011. They said it was the most amazing day and one they will always remember and treasure.
Claremorris GAA club paid tribute to a stalwart following his passing in June.
The late Seamus Harte of Lehinch, Hollymount, and formerly of Castlegar, Claremorris, played for the South Mayo club in the 1950s and also played for his county at junior level in 1956.
Claremorris GAA noted that Seamus was a club "stalwart" and that he "retained strong links with the club all down through the years and was a guest at various club nights".
The Claremorris Tidy Towns were out weeding at Killeenfarna, sweeping at James Street and cleaning the playground area last week.

This month’s Coffee Morning takes place at Cúram Claremorris on July 4 at 10.30am.
During the morning, Pat Burns from Flynn’s Pharmacy, Claremorris will give a presentation on natural remedies for women’s health and well-being.
Elizabeth Anne Kilcourse (nee Brennan), of Station Rise, Ballyhaunis, and formerly of Weatherforth, Claremorris, recently passed away peacefully in hospital surrounded by her loving and caring family.
Predeceased by her parents Nora and Patrick Brennan, brother Seamus, sisters Phyllis and Margaret, and infant siblings Mary and Paddy, Anne will be sadly missed by her loving family, relatives, neighbours and friends.
May she rest in peace.
Claremorris Tidy Towns were delighted to receive a very generous cheque for €200 from the Claremorris 25 Card Game Club recently.
The Claremorris Darts Summer Singles Finals concluded recently in The Western Hotel when Ultan McDyer defeated Danny McNamara in the final of a fantastic night of darts with some great games on show.
Well done to Claremorris Swimming Club’s masters swimmers, Karen Molloy, John Craddock and James Brennan, who took part in the Longest Day Swim 2.5km, organised by Galway Swimming Club.
Congratulations to Karen and James who both came in first place for the female and male category.
A lovely presentation took place at Claremorris Athletic Club recently.
Philip Griffith won three medals at the All-Ireland Indoor Championships - gold in the 600m, and silver in both the long jump and 60m.
The presentation was to recognise Philip for setting a new national record in his 600m victory. The athletics club said: “Throughout the year, Philip has shown huge commitment and determination in each of his events. Well done Philip, and we wish you the very best of luck in the upcoming Outdoor All-Ireland Finals.”
Congratulations to Tadgh McGuinness on winning the recent Claremorris GAA 50/50 Lotto. Kevin picked up his prize of €800 - the winning ticket was sold in Warde's.

Claremorris Colts RFC will host their annual general meeting on Wednesday, July 24. The AGM will be held in the Dalton Inn, Claremorris.

Claremorris Family Resource Centre recently spent a rainy afternoon watching
for their 'Movie Time with Friday Friends'. The people in attendance enjoyed popcorn and refreshments while watching the Cong-shot film.Thanks to everyone who turned out for the final bell at Muire Gan Smál Primary School. It was a bittersweet day, and while there were a few tears there was also a lot of excitement about what was to come.
The school are looking forward to welcoming students to their new amalgamated school - Claremorris National School - with Claremorris Boys School.
Claremorris Swimming Club thanked Mary O’Brien for a lifetime of commitment and dedication to their club as a swimmer, coach and committee member.
Mary, who took her last coaching session last week, will be missed by all. The swimming club said: “Mary was an integral part of our club - we know you’re close by if we should need to call on your experience. Enjoy the free time and relaxation.”
With a little over four weeks to go to the 104th Claremorris Agricultural Show and Trade Fair on August Bank Holiday (Sunday, August 4), big plans are being put in place by the show committee and volunteers. This is to ensure that this year's event will be one of the largest and most successful in its long history dating back to the early years of the last century.
The show embraces the modern with the traditional providing the ideal opportunity for people of all ages to meet face to face in a friendly and welcoming environment. The show will be held at the Claremorris Athletic Grounds (Eircode F12 KX 63), commonly known locally as the 'Racecourse' or the 'Showgrounds'.
The show will boast a wide variety of offerings with over 275 show classes taking place.
A meeting of the Claremorris Show committee was held in the Western Hotel last Tuesday night (July 2) to finalise plans.

St Colman’s College students recently completed a 100km Camino from Ferreiros to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. They said it was a wonderful experience for all.
A thank you was extended to three past pupils - Fr Shane Costello, David Corless and Cormac Henry - who made the five-day trek with the students.
