The death took place at the Mayo Hospice, Castlebar, of Charles Whittington, Bellaghy, Charlestown. His remains were removed from Horkan’s Funeral Home, Lowpark, Charlestown to St James’ Church, Charlestown, and burial took place after solemn requiem Mass to the Cemetery of the Resurrection.
Charles is survived by his wife Anne-Marie, daughter Vanessa, brothers John, Seamus, Simeon and Germanus, sister Marie, brother-in law, sisters-in law, mother-in law, nieces, nephews, relatives and a wide circle of friends. The late Charles who was pre-deceased by his parents Jimmy and Bridgie, was a well known and respected member of the community who had forged many strong friendships in the area. He was devoted to his family and formed a strong bond with his wife Ann-Marie and daughter Vanessa.
He worked as a caretaker in St Joseph`s Community College, Charlestown for many years and was a dedicated and conscientious employee who took his role very seriously and fulfilled his duties to the best of his ability. Charles was a good community man and a popular presence in and around the communities of Charlestown and Bellaghy. He was a good neighbour and friend to all and had a wit and humour that endeared him to many. He lived life in the best way he knew how and always bore a smile and embraced each and every day with relish and enthusiasm.
The large crowds who attended the removal of his remains and subsequent burial was ample proof of the esteem and affection in which he was held and Bellaghy and Charlestown have lost a good man in the true sense of the word. He leaves many outstanding memories which his family and those who knew him best will cherish and cling dear to in the deep, dark hours and days that lie ahead and we tender our deepest sympathies to the bereaved.

Congratulations are extended to James Breheny, son of Liam and Denise Breheny, Hagfield. Charlestown who celebrated his eighteenth (18th) birthday recently. James is a well known and prominent young man in the community and is a key member of the Charlestown Sarsfields GAA Club where he fulfils many roles and duties not least of which is his social and digital media presence as he keeps all members, supporters and followers informed of all the club’s business and results on a daily basis. He has a good command of his brief and has a great passion for the club which manifests itself in so many ways. He has green and white blood coursing through his veins as he has immersed himself into the club and become a key part of their communications network. He has also forged quite the niche for himself as a cub reporter covering games for Mid-West Radio and The Western People to mention but two and has a really nice delivery to boot. His transitions to eighteen have been seamless and he`s even managed the odd shave or two which is all part and parcel of that journey to manhood.
I’m sure there was a cake unveiled in the Breheny household to mark such a venerated occasion and James had little difficulty quenching the flames all eighteen candles ignited as he has a pretty powerful set of lungs on him. I’m sure James has set aside a small slice of the delicious cake his good mother Denise had made or purchased for the occasion and I do look forward to tasting the said offering and equally look forward to taking delivery of it really soon. Here's wishing James enjoyed his graduation to adulthood and wishing many more celebrations of this nature in the months and years ahead. Keep up the good work James.

Charlestown U21 team assured themselves of a home quarter final in the County C championship with a comfortable 3-10 to 1-10 victory over Shrule/Glencorrib in round two played at Fr O`Hara Park recently.
The Sarsfields victory was fully merited with most of the damage being done in the opening half when they pulled the rug from under the visitors challenge with a two goal burst which put the home side in a position of dominance with Mark Lowther and Sean Kilroy the men in the right place at the right time to apply two neat finishes thus rounding off some fine work out the field as the Sarsfields mesmerised their opponents with some deft passing and slick interplay.
The Sarsfields were in a good position at half-time sitting on a 2-7 to 0-6 lead and were in no mood to relinquish the seven point lead they had worked hard on amassing as the second half got underway.
While the South Mayo lads rallied to an extent and came at the Sarsfields hard at various stages, truth to tell the green and white lads kept their opponents at arms length for the most part save for the concession of a goal which briefly threatened their dominance and control.
They responded in the best way possible with a third goal with Paddy Joe Dunleavy once again underlining his attacking flair as he stole forward from his wing back station to finish expertly to put the seal on an impressive Sarsfields victory thus securing an all-important home quarter-final which provides them with a great chance of making the semi-finals.
All lines of the team functioned effectively with each and every player winning their individual battle which laid the platform for a good overall team display.

Well done to the Charlestown Sarsfields U13 girls who rounded off their season in some style with a thrilling victory over Knockmore in the division 3 U13 league final played at The Centre of Excellence, Bekan recently. The girls saved their best for the biggest day of the lot and got the job done in stirring fashion and were worthy winners against a very good and spirited Knockmore team. Great credit must go to the management team of Aidan Higgins, Trina Donohue, Darragh McMeel and John Gately who got the very best out of a very committed and willing panel who improved immeasurably with each and every game they played. The girls have a great future ahead of them with this title one of many that will hopefully come their way on the green and white of the Sarsfields in the years to come. Well done to all concerned and what a great way to wrap up the season where the Sarsfields once again contended at every grade and brought home plenty of silverware to boot.

There was a good turnout at the weekly darts competition held in Walsh’s Bar, Main Street, Charlestown, on Sunday, November 2, as The Egg and The Dynamo fought out another intriguing instalment of the weekly classic. Governor Gus was back in the referee’s hut after his flirtation with success in the last two weeks and he looked like he was never away as he ensured both protagonists obeyed the rules to the letter of the law. The Dynamo made a fast start and took the opening set with a tidy double top finish in the fourth leg doing the trick nicely. The Egg fought back well and took the next two sets with some razor sharp doubles giving him the edge over his opponent as the Dynamo’s form tapered off somewhat from the high of the first set. He quickly regained his composure in the fourth however and levelled the match with a treble twelve, double sixteen blast taking the game to a deciding set.
The Egg made the better start and looked in pole position to close out the match when he surged into a two-leg lead. Deignan remains a resilient competitor and seldom backs down when pinned to the wall and hit back in stirring fashion by winning the next two legs to take the game to a deciding leg. It looked to all the world as if the Dynamo would prevail but the Egg dug deep into that vast reservoir of spirit and fibre as he eked out the victory with a sensational 170 finish almost bringing the house down as his final dart found the centre of the bulls eye. The Dynamo was stunned into silence bore the look of a haunted man and the game looked his for the taking as he had three darts in his quiver ready to take aim at double eighteen. The Egg had other ideas however and sunk to the floor in celebration as his large band of supporters shouted his name to the high heavens in the crazy and hysterical moments that followed his epic finish. A cracking end to a brilliant scrap with the The Egg in full singing voice as he savoured this remarkable victory, his third of a somewhat stop-start season.
