Ballycroy Women’s Group recently held a successful fundraising event in support of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation. Through the generous support of the local community and the efforts of the group’s members, a total of €700 was raised.
The group was proud to present the donation to Martina Jennings, CEO of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, during a recent gathering. The funds will go towards providing palliative care services and supporting families throughout the region.
On behalf of the Mags, Kevin and girls and the Deane family, they express their deepest and most heartfelt thanks to everyone both at home and abroad; local groups, committees, clubs, neighbours and friends who came together to organise and support the many fundraisers for the Help Mags Find Relief fund. Your kindness, generosity, and tireless efforts made it possible for Mags to undergo spinal deformity surgery and the surgeries have now taken place. Due to the expertise and diligence of the wonderful surgeons and team in London, Mags is recovering from an invasive and complicated 5 stage surgery.
There is still a long road ahead in terms of healing and rehabilitation but there has been progress thankfully. They are truly overwhelmed by the outpouring of support; whether that was by donating, organising, showing up or spreading the word, whatever the part when this support was needed most, it will never be forgotten.
Our Lady’s Secondary School held their end of term awards recently and congratulations to all who were recognised for their endeavours.
First up in the series of Leaving Certificate awards was the ‘Peer Appreciation Award’. This award is voted for by the Leaving Certificate students for a person in their year group who they feel deserves recognition from their peers for their contribution to the group during their time in OLSS. The winner of the Peer Appreciation Award 2025 was James Doocey. Here are just some of the things his peers had to say about him when nominating him:
‘James is such a nice person and is always smiling. He’s also very funny', ‘James is always helpful and looks out for everybody’, ‘He’s kind, reliable and a true gentleman!
As a school they certainly agree with the students. James is a very deserving winner, congratulations to him. He is a past pupil of Barnatra National School.
Next up was the prestigious ‘Ceist Award’. This award is given to a student/students who always live up to the ethos of the school. Ebony Hefferon and Líle O'Donoghue were chosen for this award because they exhibit qualities of respect, kindness to students and teachers and commitment to the school every day. Both girls have represented the school on many occasions in both academic and extracurricular events while also showing great leadership skills. Ebony and Líle are both wonderful students and certainly deserving of this award. Ebony is a past pupil of Corclough NS and Líle attended Shraigh NS.
The final Leaving Certificate award of 2025 goes to Rachel Boylan, who has been named ‘Student of the Year’ and is this year's recipient of the very special Gerard McNally Memorial Cup. Selected by school staff, this prestigious award honours a student who consistently demonstrates outstanding behaviour, actively participates in school life and shows kindness and support to both staff and peers. Rachel embodies all these qualities and more. She has been a shining example of dedication, positivity and leadership throughout her time with at Our Lady’s. She was a proud representative of the school and of her primary school, Belmullet NS, Rachel is a truly deserving winner of this special honour.

Sports Genus - Rory finally gets his green jacket despite nearly wedging it away. Your perseverance pays off as you picked him every year. Then you all took a break from scoring as nobody chose an unknown, recently banned, amateur Chinese lad to win at The Crucible. Nobody picked a world famous legend of the game to come runner up either. Toulouse and Leinster disappoint as Bordeaux and Northampton contest the oval ball cup. Of course Liverpool, Arsenal, City and Chelsea close out the top four places. The romantic dreamers among you who had Forest and Newcastle woke up screaming.
Relegation was fairly predictable with the three coming up going straight down again. Hats off for David Moyes as many of you had Everton to drop which is a sign of how well he has done since taking over. Relegation selections will be trickier next year as Spurs and Man Utd must be contenders to hit The Championship.
Louth win Leinster resulting in nobody getting all four provincial champions.
You will notice that everybody has scored zero in this weekend's Champions League final. Well, everybody except Pierce. He has Inter Milan. If they lose, he gets five points but if he wins, clause seven states that if you are the only winner of an event you score double. Twenty points would make him harder to catch than a slippery slithery snake in a soggy spinach soup. Kevin Barrett has his PSG jersey ready.
It’s a new beginning for Iorras Aontaithe with the introduction of two girls teams going forward with U12 and U14 making their debut. Training will commence on Wednesday evenings, June 4, from 6-7.15pm. The club would be delighted if a few female coaches and parents would help.
