Last June, Ballinrobe GAA and LGFA Club hosted the inaugural Éilis Maloney Seven-a-Side Ladies Football Memorial Tournament in Flanagan Park and the day was a resounding success.
Celebrating the life and legacy of former Ballinrobe ladies’ junior team captain and lifelong GAA champion, Éilis Maloney, the tournament featured the hosts plus four neighbouring clubs - Kilmaine, The Neale, Tourmakeady and Shrule-Glencorrib, all of which had a connection with Éilis and her family. To make it even more meaningful, all funds raised, through donations on the day and via an iDonate page that ran in the weeks around the tournament, were in aid of the Mayo Suicide Bereavement Liaison Services, which operates from the Family Centre in Castlebar.
Recently, members of the Maloney family along with Ballinrobe LGFA chairperson, Nicola Macken, presented a cheque for €3,629, the total proceeds from the event, to Sinéad O’Malley, Head of Services for the Family Centre in Castlebar, where the service is based.
“We were honoured to be part of such a beautiful day in honour of a very special person,” said Sinéad, “and blown away by the generosity of those who donated to the Mayo Suicide Bereavement Liaison Services. Fundraising is a huge part of the work we do, and this contribution will support the delivery of valuable services by our professional counselling team.”
Ballinrobe LGFA chairperson, Nicola Macken, thanked the club, the people of Ballinrobe and surrounding communities for their generous support.
“We wanted to do Éilis proud with the tournament because she was such an important part of our club. The way people and communities rallied in support of the event is testament to the regard in which she was held, and this final fundraising sum is further evidence of that. We are very grateful to everyone who contributed,” she said.
