Local Notes: Ballinrobe Community School win Connacht Junior Ladies Football c championship

The Ballinrobe Community School team who won the Connacht Junior Ladies Football C championship last week.
Tickets for Ballinrobe Musical Society's production of the acclaimed musical The Phantom of The Opera are now on sale. The show takes place in Ballinrobe Community School from Sunday, February 11 to Saturday, February 17. The Sunday show will commence at 5pm while all other performances will commence at 8pm nightly.
The Phantom of The Opera will be played by society stalwart Niall Conway, who will be joined on stage by Eve Garavan (Christine Daée), Edward Scott (Raoul Vicomte de Chagny), Richard Crumlish (Gilles André), John Byrne (Richard Firmin), Kate MacDonnell (Meg Giry), Angela Staunton (Meg Giry), Michael Cooney (Joseph Buquet), Catherine Conway (Carlotta Giudicelli) and Joff Manning (Ubaldo Piangi).
The Phantom ran on Broadway for over 13,000 performances and remains the second-longest running show in the history of the West End. Scored by the legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, the show features many of the best-loved songs in the history of musical theatre, including Music of The Night, Masquerade, All I Ask Of You, The Phantom of The Opera and Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again.

The theme of this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade in Ballinrobe will be May the Robe Rise to Meet You. Local businesses have been urged by the organising committee – comprising Ballinrobe Community Development Council and Tacú Family Resource Centre – to take part in the parade and / or decorate their shop windows. Schools and community groups are also set to turn up in large numbers.

Over 35 teams took part in Ballinrobe Rugby Club’s fundraising table quiz in Art O’Neill’s Bar last week. A tie-breaker was needed before the winning team emerged, comprising Keith McTigue, Padraic Costello, Tom Carney, Joe Burke and Kevin Murphy. The club have thanked all who helped the event such a great success.
Ballinrobe Community School (BCS) lost to St Attracta’s Community School, Tubbercurry, in the Mayo First Year football league final last week, but the junior women of BCS have a Connacht title to celebrate.
They defeated Coláiste Chiarán, Athlone, in the provincial C decider, in the University of Galway Airdome, Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence. The final score was 4-12 to 2-3 and the game featured some outstanding Ballinrobe play.

Coaches Dean Shaughnessy and Mike Corley will join manager Declan Commons as the backroom team for the Ballinrobe Town U17 girls’ team this season.
Ballinrobe sportspeople have been popping up here, there and everywhere on representative squads of late. This is a source of great pride for Ballinrobe people living locally and those scattered around the world.
When Mayo defeated Galway in the opening round of the Allianz National Football League (Division One) on Sunday week last, in Pearse Stadium, Salthill, four Ballinrobe players were on the bench – Diarmuid Duffy, Kevin Quinn, Aaron McDonnell and James Murphy. Diarmuid came off the bench to make his debut and during his short time on the pitch, he was fouled for a penalty which was converted by Cillian O’Connor.
Their clubmate Candice Colfar has gained a place on the Mayo U14 ladies football team for the forthcoming season. Ballinrobe native Sinead Stagg, formerly Costello, is the team manager.
Ry-Lee Burke, Ballinrobe Town, featured on the Mayo U14 girls’ side which defeated Kerry 2-1 to advance to the All-Ireland semi-final. Karol Stachurski and Jayden McNamara, two promising Ballinrobe Town teenagers, were members of the U14 Mayo squad that beat Limerick to also clinch an All-Ireland semi-final place.
Ballinrobe Town FC goalkeeper Ajay Gormley-Walsh has been selected on the Mayo FC U15 squad for the forthcoming League of Ireland campaign. This move means Ajay will sign with Mayo for the season and is a just reward for a goalkeeper who has worked hard to hone his craft in recent seasons.
Ballinrobe Community School has announced a Poetry and Short Story competition among its student body. Submissions, which should be under 750 words, can be submitted to jarredalngohuro@ballinrobecs.ie before March 21. The winners will receive prizes and have their literary output published in the school yearbook. There are categories for senior and junior cycle students.

Mná le Chéile, a group of ladies who meet on Monday mornings in Tacu Family Resource at 11am, welcome new members. The group members share hobbies and ideas in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Ballinrobe Town AFC are looking to recruit head coaches/volunteers to become part of the management teams for their U17 women’s team and senior women’s team. Those interested are asked to message the club’s Facebook page or contact any committee member.
Meanwhile, the club’s preparations for the upcoming Mayo Super League season continued apace with the recent appointment of John Wilson to Xavi Vasquez’s coaching team. John has extensive experience in strength and conditioning and has also done great work within the club’s underage structure, winning three trophies with the U12 and U13 boys’ teams last season.
Ballinrobe sauntered to a comprehensive 52-3 victory over Ballina at The Green in the Connacht Junior Cup. The signs were ominous for Ballina at an early juncture in this very much one-sided encounter in South Mayo, with Rory Murphy going over for a try after just five minutes.
