Call-out for U-35 members at Ballina Golf Club 

Ballina Golf Club continues with its busy calendar this month, offering plenty of activity for young and older players.

The club has re-introduced a special Under-35 membership, details of which are available from Eddie or Tina at the club office. Call in person or ring 096-21050.

The results of the competition played on Sunday, May 11 were as follows: Ladies 18 Hole Stroke (sponsored by The Great National Hotel Ballina): 1st, Michelle Mulligan, 66nett; 2nd, Deirdre Beattie, 68nett; and 3rd, Shauna Smith, 68nett (B9). 

Gents 18 Hole Stroke (sponsored by Breathnach's Pub): Overall winner - Brendan Kilgallon, 66nett; Category 1 - Michael Brady, 67nett; Category 2 - Kenny Casey, 67nett; and Category 3 - Paddy McCann, 66nett.

Further tasters from Yeast Meets West 

Planning for the 2025 Yeast Meets West festival in Ballina continues, and the organisers have confirmed that Crossmolina’s Reel Deel Brewing Company will be among the guest breweries attending the forthcoming summer festival.

This year’s event mark’s the 10th anniversary of the event, and will be held on Saturday, August 30, at Kathleen Lynn Lane, located in the town centre between O’Rahilly Street and Teeling Street car park.

Along with a range of craft beers the event will also feature food and plenty of live music. DJ Nick is on the programme and will perform from 10pm that night, with more acts yet to be announced.

The late Michael Cahalan 

The death has taken place of Michael Cahalan, Convent Hill Crescent, Ballina and Turloughmore, Galway.

Michael was the beloved husband of Anne, dearly loved father of Brendan and Paul, cherished father-in-law of Patricia and Irene, and adored grandfather of Daire, Lauren, Conall, Aoibhinn and Crevan.

He will be sadly missed by his sisters Marie and Anne, brothers Patsy, Murt and Seamus, grandaunt Kathleen, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, godchildren, extended family, neighbours and his many dear friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Pat and Mary.

Michael’s Funeral Mass was celebrated in the Church of Our Lady of Knock, Lackagh, Co Galway, with burial afterwards in New Cemetery, Bohermore.

May he rest in peace.

Cinderella story in dance 

Fairytale classic ‘Cinderella’ is the theme for this year’s performance by the students of the Geraldine Butler School of Ballet.

The show in Ballina Arts Centre is a family-orientated rendition of the famous story of Cinderella and her jealous sisters, a wicked stepmother, a fairy godmother, a pumpkin turned into a carriage, a handsome prince, a midnight chase, a lost slipper and, of course, the happy ending.

‘Cinderella’ is taking place in Ballina Arts Centre on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15, starting at 8pm on both evenings.

The late Desmond Langan 

The death has taken place of Desmond (Dessie) Langan, Derreen, Knockanillaun, Ballina.

Dessie will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his heartbroken family, including sister Carmel, brothers Joe and Michael, brother-in-law Brendan, sisters-in-law Joan and Geraldine, and nieces and nephews Sharon, Paul, Kenneth, Michelle, David and Lorraine. Also by his best friends Cora, Seán and Páidí, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, neighbours and many friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Joe and Kathleen, aunts, uncles and members of the Cassidy and Langan families.

Dessie reposed at the residence of his sister and brother-in-law Carmel and Brendan Hughes, Knockanillaun.

Requiem Mass was celebrated in the Church of the Assumption, Ardagh, Ballina on Monday of last week, with burial afterwards in Ardagh Cemetery.

Recently married 

Congratulations have been extended to Michael Cullen, Breaffy, Ballina and Chloe Calvey, Greenhills Estate, Ballina on their recent marriage.

Furniture upcycling course 

A furniture upcycling course in Ballina starting next week will introduce people to how transforming unwanted or used furniture into something new, visually appealing or valuable can help the environment.

This six-week course, launching on June 3 with Anna Doyle, runs in the Craoibhín Ballina Centre, Cathedral Road on Tuesdays, from 2pm to 4pm, at a cost of €48.

Pearse Street grooves 

TheNCF Cultural Co-Op will host DJ Spuggy and DJ PC at its Pearse Street, Ballina venue (opposite the Jackie Clarke Collection) on Saturday, May 31.

This June Holiday Weekend gig will blend distinctly different sounds into a highly entertaining night of dance music for privileged patrons.

DJ PC will bring his own hybrid digital/vinyl set of driving house, pulsing techno and cuts across dub, disco, soul, funk and breakbeat, always rooted in groove.

DJ Spuggy will deliver house, techno, off-kilter Italo, and raw EBM with a leftfield twist.

Leigue Cemetery Mass on Sunday 

Sunday next, June 1, marks the annual Leigue Cemetery Mass in Ballina. People are invited to come along and remember their loved ones and all those who are buried in the graveyard, which is one of the largest burial grounds in Mayo. The service will start at 3pm.

Two-week artist residency on offer 

Saturday next, May 31, is the closing date for applications for the new Visual Artist Residency Programme at TheNCF Cultural Co-Op in Ballina.

The two-week residency, which is on offer from September 27 to October 11 next, will provide the successful artist with time, space and resources to explore their creative process.

TheNCF Cultural Co-Op, in partnership with Ballina Fringe Festival, welcomes applications from both emerging and established visual artists based in Ireland.

This residency is designed to create lasting connections between the visiting artist and Ballina, with the possibility for future collaborations. Gallery space to showcase completed projects or work underway will offer an important platform for the artist-in-residence.

A stipend of €500 will be paid to support the creative journey of the successful participant in the programme, while the chance to collaborate with local artists and engage with the community will make this residency even more attractive.

A dedicated workspace will be supplied at the Ballina-based TheNCF Cultural Co-Op, located on Lower Pearse Street in the heart of the town. Accommodation will also be provided within walking distance of the artist studio, ensuring a comfortable and focused residency.

Mayo COPD Support Group meeting 

The monthly meeting of Mayo COPD Support Group will take place on Thursday, May 29. The meeting in the Tennis Club, Lannagh Road, Castlebar at 2.30pm will be addressed by a speaker from Mayo County Library Services.

Cash winners in Ardnaree 

The rewards continue to roll in for many of those who are taking part in the weekly Ardnaree Sarsfields GAA Club 50/50 Cash Draw.

Recent winners include Rory Clarke, Ballina (€350); Mary Dolan, Crossmolina (€390); Patrick Doherty, Ardnaree (€320); and Oliver Rouse, Ballina (€350).

The late Teresa Foody 

The death has taken place of Teresa Foody (née Loughney), Gurteens, Ballina.

Teresa was the beloved wife of Pat and dear mother to Lorraine Fehily, Ian, Kenneth, Joe, Alan and Edel Cleary.

She will be sadly missed by her husband, sons, daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, in-laws, relatives, neighbours and friends.

She was predeceased by her grandson Shane.

Teresa reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina on Wednesday last. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St Patrick’s Church, Ballina on Thursday, followed by burial in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina.

May she rest in peace.

Enniscrone golfers raise money for Ballina FRC 

The ladies of Enniscrone Golf Club raised €657 for Ballina Family Resource Centre's Counselling Services following a recent fundraising activity. Lady Captain of the club, Elaine Doherty, presented Lizzanne Donnelly and Shirley Moyles of the resource centre with a cheque last week.

Another busy week for Craoibhín members 

Shopping Bus Friday continues to be a vital service offered by Craoibhín Ballina which collects socially isolated people to bring them into Ballina to get their weekly shopping.

The Moy Valley Resources-operated organisation on Cathedral Road runs its own bus every Friday, and more information on how to avail of this service is available from 087-2785365.

Other activities at Craoibhín Ballina this week will feature a range of classes and a choice of interesting topics for everyone, including some outdoor action.

Tomorrow (Wednesday), the centre has seated exercises between 10am and 10.45am, followed by a Spanish conversation class for one hour from 11am. In the afternoon you can enjoy a bingo session from 2pm to 4pm.

On Thursday there’s boccia from 11am to 1pm and chair yoga from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

An art class will be held in the centre from 10am to 12pm on Friday, with Irish conversation from 12.30pm to 2pm that same day.

Next Monday will see French conversation from 9.45am to 10.45am. For the more energetic, loop and trail walks are taking place between 10.30am and 12.30pm, also on Monday.

Knitting classes are from 10am to 12pm on Tuesday.

Craoibhín Ballina is located on Cathedral Road, Ballina, next door to St Muredach’s Cathedral.

Grainne Uaile Western Dive Rally 

Grainne Uaile Sub Aqua Club, Ballina will welcome visiting divers from many parts of the country to Kilcummin over the weekend of Friday, August 15 to Sunday, August 17.

The club is expecting divers from Ireland and from abroad to attend its Western Dive Rally at Kilcummin Harbour.

Last year’s event afforded an opportunity for the club to showcase the region’s incredible diving offering, attracting a large number of divers and spectators for its international dive rally.

River Moy Swim entries still welcome

With the Moy Swim just seven weeks away, enthusiastic swimmers are reminded that entries are still being accepted.

This swim is one of Ireland’s oldest river swims and is run in conjunction with Ballina Salmon Festival and Mayo Sports Partnership. Many other local organisations and businesses in Ballina also support the open water swimming event, which will take place this year on Saturday, July 19.

The swim is run under the auspices of Swim Ireland and will cater for all levels of swimmers. There will be a category for both wetsuit and skin swimmers, with 2.5k and 600m competitive swims and a participative swim. Everyone taking part must be able to swim the distance of the event for which they have registered. 

The River Moy Swim is confined to those age 16 or over, while under-18s must be accompanied by an adult, except when in the water. Timing chips and hats will be available at the Kennedy Glasgow Centre, The Quay, Ballina from 8am to 11am on the morning of July 19.

Registration is via Eventmaster while further information is available from the social media pages of The River Moy Swim and Ballina Salmon Festival. 

Dementia-friendly café open on Sunday 

A dementia-friendly café – the only one of its kind in Mayo – will be open in the Craoibhín Ballina centre on Cathedral Road this coming Sunday afternoon, June 1, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

A dementia cafe is a welcoming meeting place for anyone who is affected by dementia, and convenes in Ballina on the first Sunday of each month.

People living with dementia, their families and friends, healthcare professionals and people who are interested in supporting a dementia-inclusive community are all welcome to attend.

Dementia cafes, run by local voluntary steering committees right around the country, are an important community resource for people living with dementia and for family carers, and are always free of charge to attend.

The Ballina pop-up café at Craoibhín Ballina, located right beside St Muredach’s Cathedral, is a friendly and welcoming space for people, with complimentary treats and drinks for all who come along.

Miniature painting workshop

Next Saturday, May 31, adults and anyone over the age of 16 can engage in a workshop which introduces the intricate art form known as Mughal Miniature Painting.

Hina Khan, whose current exhibition is currently on display in the main gallery of Ballina Arts Centre, will deliver the workshop on the style, which is rooted in the royal courts of the Mughal Empire. This refined Indo-Persian art form is known for its intricate detail, vibrant colours and rich storytelling.

The workshop introduces participants to the cultural significance of Mughal miniatures, while familiarising them with the use of traditional materials and techniques. Participants will study Vasli making, paper preparation, treatment of paper using natural pigments, how to layer colours and brushing techniques.

And they will learn how to express personal creativity within this art form’s classical constraints.

The workshop, which will take place in Ballina Arts Centre, costs €25 plus booking fee, and takes place from 1pm to 4pm.

Cooneal Foróige donation to Ballina CFR 

Ballina Community First Responders continues with its potentially life-saving work and recently accepted a cheque from Cooneal Foróige Club which will help with its endeavours.

Ballina Community First Responders are volunteers who are trained to attend certain types of emergency calls in the area. Their aim is to reach what may be a life threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives.

Their role is to help stabilise the patient and provide the appropriate care, including CPR and defibrillation, until the more highly skilled ambulance crew arrives on scene to take over the treatment.

The donation from Cooneal Foróige Club was made by Grace Mangan, and accepted on behalf of Ballina Community First Responders by Brian Connor.
