Defective Concrete Block (DCB) Support Group

Homeowner led initiative, wishes to create emotional support for widowed / divorced /separated / single property owners in Mayo affected by pyrite / DCB, navigating this process alone.  Living Well programme

Living well is a free HSE programme which helps people living with any long-term health condition to manage their condition and improve their overall wellbeing. Anyone with conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, COPD, cardiac illness, depression, etc. can benefit from these workshops. The topics covered include – getting a good night’s sleep, healthy eating, physical activity, managing symptoms like pain and fatigue, managing low mood, communication skills, etc. The friendly workshops are interactive and informal, and 95% of previous participants have stated the programme helped them improve their quality of life.

A new programme will commence on Tuesday, May 20, in Bangor Erris, from 10.30am – 1pm, continuing weekly at that time for six weeks.  Places are free but advance registration is required. To find out more, contact Fiona Cunnane 087 7185615 or by email at fcunnane@southmayo.com.

Daffodil Day in Belmullet

The Irish Cancer Society thank most sincerely all who helped in any way on Daffodil Day in Belmullet area this year. They thank all who helped in any way on the day, the generous donors who supported this worthy cause by buying Daffodil day gifts, donating online or contributing on the day.  Thanks to Patrick Cosgrove who donated so generously on the day. Linda and Seona, your hard work in organising all on the day has paid off. A total of €7090 has been lodged to the Irish Cancer Society account. 

Erris Athletic Club

Well done to the U9-U11 athletes at the Connaught Indoor Championship in Athlone recently, they were fantastic. It was the first time competing in an indoor competition for many. Well done to everyone who took part, you should be very proud of yourself.

The U9's involved were; Cara Geraghty, Blaithin Shannon, Annie Lavelle, Molly May Carey, Mae Howard, Emily Gaughan, Theo Padden, Ruben Conroy, Tadhg McLaughlin, Louie O Connor, Liam Barrett, Kyle Padden and Christopher Sheridan. The U10’s that took part were Harry Barrett and Conn Howard; U11’s Ellie Togher, Mila Jay McLaughlin, Róisin Edwards, Seán Walsh, David Walsh, Michael Walsh, Ben O Connor, Oliver Reilly and Shane Naughton.

There were fantastic results with lots of personal bests and performances on the day. Róisin Edwards finished 5th in the U11 long jump, and 6th in the 60m. Michael Walsh finished 4th in the 400m and 6th in the 60m. The mixed U11 relay also performed fantastic finishing in 4th place. The U9 mixed relay and U9 girls relay also finished 6th.

The medallists on the day were; Louie O'Connor, U9 gold in 60m, gold in long jump and bronze in U9 relay: Ben O'Connor silver in U11 60m: Emily Gaughan bronze in U9 60m: U9 boys relay bronze; U11 boys relay silver.

The draw was held on April 27, and the numbers drawn were; 15, 19, 26 and 28 with no winner for a jackpot 10,600. The house prize winner of €100 was Conor McAndrew, Knocknalower and 2 x €30 offline winners were Adam and Leah Irwin, Swinford and Sean and Aoife, Milltown. The €30 online winners were Mark Garvin, Shrataggle and Liz Rafter, Glenamoy. The jackpot for tonights draw is €10,700.

Whales and Dolphins that can be found off the Erris coast

On May 9, at 7pm Gemma O'Connor of the IWDG (Irish Whale and Dolphin Group) will host a talk in the SOLAS centre on the Whales and Dolphins that can be found off the Erris coast. There is a €5 cover charge to this event with €2 being donated to the local Ballyglass RNLI.

Swimming tips in this warm weather

Five steps to know how to float, however you end up in the water, if you end up in difficulty, Float to Live. Tilt your head back with ears submerged. Relax and try to breathe normally. Move your hands to help you stay afloat. It's ok if your legs sink, people all float differently. Spread your arms and legs to improve stability.

Erris Family and Community Support Centre

Following the recent Erris INHFA Tractor Run in aid of North West STOP-Suicide Prevention, between online and cash donations, just over €5,800 has been raised for the Erris NWS Free Counselling service. For context, that will fund over 116 free counselling sessions for Erris residents.

A massive thank you to all involved, to the Broadhaven Bay Hotel, SOLAS - Scéalta an Atlantaigh centre Éachleim, the IWA Belmullet branch staff, Erris FCSC staff and board members, local volunteers, all the participants who brought their tractors out for a brilliant display and to everyone who has donated so far. You are a credit to Erris.

CLG Béal an Mhuirthead /Belmullet LGFA

CLG Béal an Mhuirthead are delighted to announce that Nursery U6 training for the 2025 season commences on Monday, May 12, from 5-6pm. All boys and girls born in 2019/2020 and currently in primary school are welcome to sign up at 5pm that day at the GAA grounds in Tallagh. Come along, be active, have fun and make friends for life, all while learning the skills of Gaelic football. 

Iorras Aontaithe

Iorras Aontaithe U17 was away to Ballinrobe on Monday, April 28, and again showed their dominance of Division 1 with a 0-5 scoreline. Iorras went in front on 15 minutes when Keelan Barrett scored from a Ryan Shevlin assist. Then one minute later Keelan Barrett was on the mark again from a Blake Doocey cross. Iorras continued their pressure and scored their third from a Ballinrobe own goal in 33 minutes. Iorras went in at the break 3-0 in front.

When play resumed Iorras continued their pressure and in the 59th minute Shay Gallagher made it 4-0 from a Ruari Togher assist. Then to cap off an excellent display Gabriel Hugget scored a penalty on 66 minutes. Full time score was Ballinrobe 0, Iorras Aontaithe 5. Congratulations to Keelan Barrett on winning the Carra Catering U17 Division One Player of the Month for March 2025. 

Erris Chamber of Commerce

Erris Chamber of Commerce marked the beginning of a new chapter with its first major event of the year recently - a transformative business networking session held at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel, Belmullet. The event had 80 local business owners, entrepreneurs and community leaders attending served as the official introduction of Brian Bakeberg as the Chamber’s new chairperson and who unveiled the Chamber’s renewed vision and strategic direction for 2025 and beyond.

Outgoing chairperson Damien Langan was praised for his years of dedicated service and the strong foundation he built for the Chamber. A highlight of the event was an inspiring session with globally renowned speaker Shay McConnon, who shared actionable strategies for developing effective leadership and fostering workplace engagement emphasising that organisations are only as effective as their people and that investing in leadership and employee engagement is key to unlocking business potential.

Karate Iorras

Congratulations to Ava Gaffney who took part in the Onakai National Kumite Championships and arrived home with a national silver medal. She was representing the WSKF Ireland where she gained great experience. Thank you to Zoe from WSKF Senshi Karate for coaching Ava on the day.

Kiltane GAA Club news

There was no winner of this week’s Kiltane GAA Club weekly lotto jackpot of €5,700, with the two €50 winners being; Sophia Cosgrove, Naas and Frank Leneghan, Bangor, while Cathal O’Malley, Liscarney and Isla Connolthan, Glenamoy both won €25. The two online winners were Deirdre Ginty, Harrow €50 and Bernie Cafferkey, Attycunnane €25.

Bingo will take place in the GAA complex Bangor this Tuesday, May 6, at 8pm. The jackpot will be €900 in 53 calls or less.

Congratulations to Josh Carey who has won a Connacht medal with the Mayo U20 team when defeating Roscommon in the final in Tuam.

Erris Youth Disability Network

 Erris Special Olympics Club is now established and inviting members to join. The club is opened to all adult’s and children, diagnosed with an intellectual disability from Erris. They would like to hear from you if you wish to join. It is hoped to have an indication of interested members by mid-May 2025, in order that events can be organised.

Gaeltacht Iorras lotto 

The jackpot has now reached €19,500. €50 winner on the draw on April 24, was Sadie Barrett (Belmullet) and €25 winner was Orla Bairéad, Gaoth Sáile. The numbers drawn were 6, 13, 26 with Bonus Number 4.

Tain Og League 

The U14 team put up a good performance vs Ballina in the first round of the Tain Og League. Ballina had a number of county players and the Gaeltacht Iorras Team are all eligible for the U14 grade in 2026. Players got a chance to practice their skills in a game environment and played with great heart and determination. Thanks to CLG Cill tSeadna for making the Du Thuma pitch, which was in superb condition, available for the match.
