Third volume in Kilmactigue local history series launched

The third volume of Kilmactigue Parish History and Memories has been launched.
The Kilmactigue Parish historical group launched
in the Aclare Digital Hub on Saturday last, December 2nd, at 3.30pm This book is the final instalment of the work begun by this industrious historical group in October 2018. In the intervening years, they have published three volumes of of their local parish. Kilmactigue parish encompasses over 50 townlands that include Banada, Tourlestrane, Aclare, Lough Talt and Kilmactigue. The original group consisted of Padraig Maye, Daniel Jones and Marie Fleming. Shortly after the publication of their second book, the group was devastated by the sudden death of their friend and fellow history enthusiast Padraig Maye in January 2021.
A period of uncertainty followed but with the encouragement and support of Padraig’s family and the wider community, Daniel and Marie began working on the final installment of the
series. This third volume is dedicated to their friend Padraig, who at the time of his untimely death had already begun work on Volume 3.This long-awaited third volume, like the previous volumes, is a celebration of the social, cultural and historical aspects of the parish. Inside the 350 + pages you will find quirky, eccentric, shocking and amusing stories of important events and facts from different periods in the history of Kilmactigue parish.
It features snippets of information gleaned from the archives covering court cases, the land struggle, social, political, religious, agricultural, and some sporting history of the district., together with personal stories and some wonderful photographs. The group hopes that this book, alongside the two previous volumes, will have achieved a lasting historical compilation of their people and their parish.
Daniel and Marie would like to acknowledge the support they have received for this project from their families, their community, and from those overseas, some with ancestral links to Kilmactigue. They would like to express a special word of thanks to the Maye family for entrusting them with Padraig’s history collection and to local shop owner Geraldine Kennedy who has been a constant support to the group throughout the project.
The proceeds of this project will be donated to the Cancer Support Centre in Tubbercurry. This centre provides a place of peace and hope where people with cancer and their families can access support, counselling, holistic therapies, and healing workshops in a caring and tranquil environment. The centre is open from 9am to 5pm each day for support and information.
