A Ballina church is to host one of Ireland’s finest pianists for two one-hour concerts by candlelight later this month.

St Michael’s Church in Ardnaree will host Frank McNamara for the fundraising concerts on Friday, April 12, with the legendary pianist performing an hour of Disney Classics followed by an hour of the music of Frédéric Chopin. All funds raised will go towards the historic church, which is one of Ballina's oldest buildings, and other Churches of Ireland in the vicinity, including Killanley, Killala, Ballycastle, Kilglass, Crossmolina and Easkey.

Frank was the musical director of The Late Late Show for 20 years and has written numerous works for orchestra as well as releasing several albums, which include his orchestral arrangements and original compositions. He also arranged and produced songs for two consecutive Eurovision winners, Linda Martin’s Why Me? and Niamh Kavanagh’s In Your Eyes.

The performance will be made all the more complete by the backdrop of St Michael’s Church, which has hosted events such as Other Voices in recent years. It is regarded as a perfect concert setting due to its excellent acoustics, and Mr McNamara has chosen it for his candlelight concerts, ensuring an even more special atmosphere.

First constructed in 1760 and then re-modelled in the early 19th century by Thomas Hamm, St Michael's is a significant part of Ballina’s built heritage and these concerts are to be the first of other planned musical events to assist in the upkeep of this and the other churches in the area.

Tickets, from €27, are available from www.eventbrite.ie or from Canon Alex Morahan on 085-8886036 or at the door on the night.
