Japanese visual artist hosts Ballina event

Artist Seiko Hayase will host a workshop at Ballina Arts Centre on Friday next.

Come to Ballina Arts Centre for a Mizubari panel workshop with Japanese visual artist Seiko Hayase on Friday, March 28th, from 11am to 1pm.

Currently based in Cork, Seiko is a visual artist in residence at Ballina Arts Centre from March 18th until April 1st. During the residency, she is completing work that she will show during an exhibition that will be opening on Saturday, April 5th, at 2pm, in the centre's beautiful concourse gallery.

If you are interested in meeting Seiko and getting a glimpse into her creative practice, you are free to drop into her studio space in the library of the arts centre anytime between 10 and 6pm from Tuesday to Friday next. Seiko would love to chat and share some of her creative process.

The workshop on March 28th is free but spaces are limited to 10 people so pre-booking is required. In this workshop, Seiko will teach you how to wrap paper on a wooden panel, a technique that you can use to get a smooth surface for your watercolor painting! Please bring a hair dryer if you have one.

If you are interested in the workshop, please contact the box office on 096-73593 or book online at www.ballinaartscentre.com.

Seeger Sessions

Bruce Springsteen’s famous ‘We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions’ album and concert tour from 2006 will be recreated in Ballina with the visit of The Seeger Sessions Revival, a 14-piece live band whose members come from Ireland and abroad.

That album took Springsteen away from his characteristic sound and into the world of the folk and protest music of Pete Seeger, an American songwriter and social activist whose songs of the 1960s included ‘We Shall Overcome’ and ‘Where Have All The Flowers Gone’.

The Seeger Sessions Revival will relive the spirit, energy and musical exuberance that was Springsteen’s album and live shows.

This diverse group of talented musicians deliver a high-energy, two-hour celebration with hits such as ‘Old Dan Tucker’, ‘Jesse James’ and ‘American Land’, to name just a few.

The band line-up includes fiddle, banjo, accordion, steel guitar, whistle, a thumping rhythm section, a superb brass section and strong vocal harmonies, so you can sit back and enjoy an evening of traditional American folk songs, with a flavour of Dixieland, rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll and gospel.

The concert will take place in Ballina Arts Centre on Saturday, March 29th, at 8pm. Booking can be made online at www.ballinaartscentre.com, by calling 096-73593, or by email at info@ballinaartscentre.com. Tickets are €25.
